The city of Cape Girardeau was started with the development of a trading post along the Mississippi by Girardot. He built the trading post on a rock outcrop at a bend inthe Mississippi. There is a good view both upriver and downriver from this rock outcrop rising perhaps 100 feet above the river. While the portion nearest the water was cut away to allow a railroad to run right next to the river, the rest of the outcrop is still there. It's just a small park, but as you climb to the top and see the view of the river, you can understand how it would be easily noticed along the river. Modern Cape Girardeau is just a few miles to the south along a flat area that is much better for loading and unloading watercraft along the Mississippi (and much more prone to flooding).
