Can you really call yourself a true Iowan if you haven't visited the Great Leaning Tower of Iowa?? As an out of state visitor, I feel a closer connection to this geographic neighbor, and also closer to the family that lives here (who also hadn't been to see this iconic landmark until now). The lean is definitely impressive - how has it not broken up and tumbled into a heap? - and the wooden ladder on the outside begs visitors to jump the barb wire to climb it. Just enough to be noticeable when I stopped there to take this picture. That's a lot I think. The facilities were well maintained and the site was very accessible from the road. I don't normally prefer to drive on gravel but imagined myself journeying back in time when gravel was everywhere and towers mostly leaned. Is it a tower? We could debate this. First time there, and what a FANTASTIC Experience. Quick and easy parking and not a lot of people, although it was a Tuesday.
I hope it will eventually have a museum we can visit to learn more about 13th wonder of the World. We left amazed but we had So So many questions!!!!
A well stocked gift shop would have added to this experience.
The large furry guards protecting the Wonder were very friendly and personable.
Will definitely visit again.
