We enjoyed the self guided tour of Brunswick Town and Ft. Anderson. We started at the visitor’s center, where we chatted with the staff about how to see everything. She told us that there was a group of archeology students with their professors who were excavating one of the old buildings. We later talked with them as we walked through the old town. We started with the indoor displays which told the history of the town and the fort, with artifacts and pictures. We then took the walking path, which is paved all the way around the site. It circles around and back to the visitors center, making it a pleasant walk. There is a low area with swamps beside the path, where alligators are sometimes seen. All we saw, however, was a small garter snake that was about two feet long. In addition to the foundations of the old buildings, you can see the embankments that were built as part of the old fort. There are some cannons which show how the fort was defended. As we circled back to the start we came to the St. Phillips Anglican Church ruins. We spent about an hour or so, and we could have stayed longer if we had the time. Enjoy your visit and take a trip...
Read moreThis place was very interesting. Even kept my 9 year old son interested the 1-2 hours we were there. The story behind the church was cool. The story of the town and the fort were also cool. But the “Storm Flag” they had on display was absolutely amazing. They have a very nice video to watch, the exhibit hall had a lot of artifacts and info. They also have a small gift area. Staff were friendly. The grounds were kept clean. The signs are getting hard to read but not a problem. We scanned the QR code and were able to get even more info online through the self guided tour. This place exceeded our expectations and so long we chose this place for an afternoon excursion. Before you leave make sure to stop by the lake you pass on the way. We saw 3 alligators just chilling in the sun. Was really...
Read moreHad an enjoyable visit recently. The exhibit hall of nicely renovated which covers the history of the area from the Native Americans through the Civil War. There were many artifacts with excellent descriptions. Aside from the exhibit hall, most of the site is outside. The remains of the church were beautiful and well marked with artistic renderings of what it would have looked like and also details of the citizens buried on the church grounds. Some feedback I would offer is some signage to indicate that part of the walking path is closed. We thought we could walk all the way around the perimeter of the fort but after getting 3/4 of the way around there was yellow tape and we had to turn around. In the middle of summer this...
