This is an extremely small Nature preserve and really more of an over exaggeration of what is a roadside park. To be fair there is an area for viewing wildlife which was great for seeing birds and butterflies but it's hardly a preserve even for the most liberal of definitions. Regardless I really enjoyed every moment I was here and it's an awesome spot to stop if you want to head down to Lake Michigan for some R & R. Signs states that park closes 1/2hr after sunset. The park is very clean and has a paved circular trail(about a 1/4 mile long total). Also it appears that the park is expanding the trails to extend around the so called "preserve" but that's an assumption and not fact. To access the beach you must go down a long set of steep stairs. The beach is absolutely beautiful and is very well kept. While on the beach I found a bunch of Petoskey stones one of which was very large. They may have stretched the meaning of what a "preserve" is but that's the only questionable thing about this park. If your nearby then you must stop and visit, you won't...
Read moreSaugatuck Dunes park has way, way better hiking, if you're looking for geological interest, challenging climbing, and cool plants. There are some things the hiking here has over it, though: the paved path is nice, and I saw some cool wildlife.
The beach here, though, is one of the best in Southwest Michigan. It's almost completely uncrowded, enormous, sandy, lined with very cool rocks, not particularly painful to walk on, and in no immediate danger of entirely disappearing into the lake unlike many of the other bluff beaches around here. The same obscurity that makes it so great, though, also means that there's no lifeguards and no easy access for EMTs, so be careful and don't test your limits. The only way up and down is a few winding, narrow, very long stairways, one of which has a 10 foot drop to the beach at the bottom. Thankfully though, that isn't...
Read more6 years ago this was the only place in South Haven area that I could go relax and enjoy the rocky beach and the cool nature trails and enjoy all of the pretty flowers and different trees and bushes. I went there today and unfortunately it looks like this township let this nature preserve go and could care less of how it currently looks. More than half of the trees are dead and falling all over and it’s more of a hazard than a preserve at this point. There use to be flowers growing down the wall ways and now it’s just overgrown and not one flower on site! Totally disappointed in this visit to this “nature preserve” where nothings being preserved unfortunately….. My hopes that plans are in place to fix this place and make it more welcoming to its surrounding...
