Very nice nature drive along a well maintained nine mile lime stone road. Many places to stop along the way and obser the natural beauty of the Florida nature coast and the Suwannee River. The are opportunities to explore the history of the area and the wildlife that make the area so diverse. There is a campground close by or you could stay in Cedar Key. Overall this is a great opportunity to see the natural beauty of Florida. For hunters, there is opportunity to hunt on this land as long as you register with the fish and wildlife ranger station.

We went to the river trail loop by the refuge headquarters at the north end of the lower Suwannee nature drive. The easy hiking trail was about 3/4 of a mile long that went to a boardwalk and overlook area on the Suwannee River. Beautiful Florida trail. Saw many different birds. Wear bugspray. Trails were well marked. Area was clean, safe and family friendly. Afterwards we went to see the big bat house that supposedly has 100,000 Brazilian free-tail bats. Very neat place.

Love this Preserve. We see something new ever time. It’s a peaceful ride that takes us an hour or more due to the scenery. We have seen armadillos, alligators, birds, butterflies, foxes, deer, and bats. Must get there 20 minutes before dusk to watch the bats leave the bathouse. Truly phenomenal!!! Thousands of bats. Fun for all ages. It’d be a great place to walk or bike as well. There’s a great stream that would be cool to kayak or paddle.
