The first thing you think about when someone says “Idaho” is “potatoes”, and lord knows the second word that comes to mind is “boring”, and that’s exactly what keeps Salmon-Challis one of the best kept secrets in the American west. The wilderness is absolutely breathtaking without any of the bustle and crowds of more well known destinations. The minute you turn off a main road it’s just you and nature; any memories of the civilized world you just left quickly fade as you’re transported back in time to a world before the west...

I've been going here for the last 19 years. Every time I enjoy what Salmon-Challis has to offer. The landscape is beautiful, the forest is deep and the trails are both plentiful and amazing. Come out well prepared to Challis though and with a vehicle capable of handling some rough terrain to make it easier on yourself. Keep an eye out for wild life. A lot of moose and antelope out recently. Stay to the right side of the road when coming around bends and...

I never saw any Salmon in the Salmon National forest and for that I almost gave it one less of a star for that, lol! I would have if it wasn't for the awesome big mountains that go on forever and the super cool canyons and all of the great roads that are out there to get to all of those places. Whoever maintains all of those deserves a big shout out because that seams like it is one heck of a job. Can we get a thumbs up for...

My 9 year old and I hiked 3,500 ft of Mt Borah. Beautiful day with some smoke. Trail is well marked. Incredible views. We'll be back once his legs are a little stronger. He's a great sport to go with me. It peaks at 12,667 and there were some out of staters and internationals there making the summit. If you're an Idahoan and physically able, it should be on your bucket list.

Well, that whole area has to rate as one of the top nature spots in the country. Not easy to access at times, but that only adds to the value, really. One beautiful spot after the next, most of them hidden. Longing to be explored, it offers everything from mountains to lakes, rivers and wild life. Always a place to come back to for more.

Lower Cedar Falls is a true Idaho gem nestled in the snow capped mtn peaks East of Mackay. A breathtaking view accompanied by rushing sounds of fresh runoff. An awesome easy hike for all ages. Trail is well maintained. Easy gravel road to trail head. Take a lunch and pause by the falls for an amazing moment in nature.
