You can cut off nearly a mile if you start just behind the cog railway station near where the little huts/cabins are(there is a sign and a good trail) it links up to this trail after only about 1/3 mile. Relatively easy going until the gem pool. Immediately after this it is steep up nearly all the way to the lake of the clouds hut. You can ride the train back down the mountain for about $48(which I did). You should be in good physical shape to go up. Great views. I went from the train station to the top of Mount Washington in 2 hours, however this was only because I was meeting some friends at the top and we wanted to ride the train back down together. Therefore I did a good bit of running. If I had had more time I would have taken around 4 hours. Others I met had taken 5-6 hours. Just depends on how fast you can go....

This trail, although I'm sure is beautiful, is misleading in some reviews. This is not for a casual hike as the rocks and roots are non stop. I'm now 61 in fair shape and we went in about a mile past Cog Train station and turned around. In August the trail was still very muddy. The rocks and roots to maneuver were non stop the entire way. I'VE done a good number of trails to waterfalls in New Hampshire but decided that by the time we had 4 miles into this the chance of injury from fatigue was too great.

A trail for the young and well conditioned ankles and knees only. Take caution if you are not prepared for a constant obstacle course you will be disappointed. Very sad that I didn't get to the upper falls as they certainly looked beautiful, but at 61 knees and ankles are...

I parked here to access Jewell Trail when I hiked Mount Washington. I did run into another hiker who said that he couldn't find the trailhead to the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail head, so I pointed him in the general direction of where I believed it to be. There are pit toilets in the parking area, and it seems that overnight parking is permitted. I have to say if you have an America the Beautiful Pass or an Access Pass you still have to fill out one of the little envelopes with your pass access number on it and put it in the box so you don't get a ticket, because whoever monitors parking doesn't always see your Access Pass or America the Beautiful pass hanging from...

The trailhead may not be very interesting but the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail itself the blast in the winter. Yes it's a long climb up but sliding back down makes you think you're young again. Be warned there are very steep sections on the way up. Make sure you're in the right shape and have the right gear, especially in the winter. We did not notice any highly technical sections on the trail, at least not with the snow on it. The lot is surprisingly small given the popularity hikes in this area. Probably better to arrive early. There is a $5 fee for parking. Additional parking up further by the Cog but I'm unclear if they support hiking out of the parking lot.

Was my first ever “real” hike and I found it difficult and dangerous at times. Especially on the ascent after the waterfall, climbing rock after rock. Descent destroyed my knees. Also came out of it with some large heel blisters; I blame this on new hiking shoes and too thin socks. Hiked to Lakes of the Clouds and back, took us about 6.5 hrs. Was worth every bit of “pain” and I feel very accomplished having done it!! The views are breathtaking. Everyone on the trail was very nice. If you’re no avid hiker then I suggest just pacing yourself, drinking lots of water and wearing cushiony socks? But I’m no expert here!!

The Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail is a challenging and scenic hike that takes you through a stunning ravine and to the summit of Mt. Washington, the highest peak in the Northeast. The trail is known for its steep inclines, rocky terrain, and spectacular views. July is best time to get clear views. You can also watch cog rail from the trail. Highlights: - Breathtaking views of the ravine and surrounding mountains - Unique and challenging terrain, including steep inclines and rocky scrambles - Sense of accomplishment when reaching the summit of Mt. Washington
