Stayed here a couple of times, and there's a lot to love about the place. It's really two separate parks - the campground and a day use area. This review relates to the campground.
Pros: Some nice sites, especially the walk-in ones along the Cold River. Bathrooms are clean. Lots of hiking trails to explore. Cold River is nice for wading and there's a small but welcoming swimming hole near the walk-in sites. Bear boxes in every site to keep critters and bugs away from your food (not to mention bears). Cold River is relaxing to fall asleep to at night. Good dry firewood for sale at the office - they'll give you a hard time if you bring in firewood, even if it's from down the street. Convenient to North Adams, Mass Moca, Shelburne Falls, and other local attractions.
Cons: There are ticks here, so check yourself often. Campsite privacy is good but not great. Occasionally you'll hear route 2 traffic/engine brakes. Practically no cell service (though this could be a "pro" for many). Showers require holding down a button and if you let go to grab the soap or lather your hair, it shuts off. Non-resident rates are steep - if you're not a Mass resident there's not much reason to stay here vs going up into Vermont or NH. "No Alcohol" signs everywhere - so enjoying some wine with your campsite-cooked meal needs to...
Read moreI had been going yearly for more than 10 years, but then the fees went crazy for out of state residents. The cabins cost more than a nice motel. That's just nuts. It was rarely quiet there anyway. It's right next to a main road. Someone was always yelling, playing music or blasting a radio well after dark. Some trails are really challenging and long, so beware and bring a map and plenty of water. The people who work here though are really, really nice though! It is a great area to explore and is close to the Vermont border (which has much lower fees.)
From their website- 2025 Tent camping is $17/night for Massachusetts residents and $54/night non-residents. Small cabins are $50/night for Massachusetts residents and $130/night for non-residents. Large cabins are $75/night for Massachusetts residents and $170/night for...
Read moreI have visited Mohawk Trail State Forest for tent camping 3 times in the past most recently 10/12, I also live in Florida year round and unfortunately I do not get to see the seasons change. Every year my closest friends get together and go tent camping just at the peak of the leaves changing and I was there this time around. The memories I came home with on my last visit will last the rest of my life from spending time with friends to lite back packing through the hills, valleys and along the streams too driving through the small towns and stopping for a pumpkin coffee and true pumpkin danish. I'm planning on bringing my wife and daughter for the 1st time this October just so they might be able to see the beauty of Mohawk Trail State Park has to...
