Mt. Philo State Park stands as a testament to the Green Mountain State's natural splendorâand it's no wonder it's the oldest state park in Vermont, established back in 1924. At just 237 acres atop the 968-foot summit of Mount Philo, you'll have panoramic vistas that stretch across Lake Champlain to the Adirondack Mountains in New York, and eastward to the rolling Green Mountains. Sunsets are spectacular. The entrance fee is $5 but it can be free if you're currently staying at any other state park. The park's trails are a hiker's dream for those seeking accessibility without an overwhelming challenge. The star attraction is the Summit Trail, a 1.7-mile out-and-back loop rated moderate with about 629 feet of elevation gain. It starts at the lower parking area and is well-marked, weaving through lush forests of maple, birch, and hemlock, with some steep stone steps that add a bit of grit but keep things family-friendly (think 45-60 minutes up for most folks). For an easier ascent, you can drive the historic carriage roadâoriginally built in 1903 for horse-drawn surreysâto the top, where picnic tables and benches await. The Western Loop (2 miles, 593 feet gain) offers a scenic alternative with cliffside views and wildflower meadows in summer. The Devil's Chair hike is a bit more challenging and I donât recommend it for younger children. Adults however, shouldn't miss it as it has you traversing under 50+ foot shear cliffs. Beware, you will have to walk on the narrow roads for a bit on either end...

Jaw dropping scenery!Went on the hike because I was at Champlain College family weekend and their itinerary listed a ârelaxing hike up Mount Philo.â We got there late and I have a sneaking suspicion they had everyone drive up The mountain. With this ârelaxing hikeâ being the distance between the car lot and the summit. We started at the bottom and there was NOTHING relaxing about it! It whooped my⊠Behind. Donât get me wrong, other people were whizzing past me but those steps were almost the death of me. I literally had to frequently stop to catch my breath and I am not as grossly out of shape as I sound. Ha It was a challenge that I overcame and lived to tell about it. So Iâm proud of myself. The only other thing that is important to note⊠The lady bug infestation! It only seemed to be on the top and side of the mountain. Youâre looking at the beautiful views and ladybugs hitting your face, flying in your mouth, jumping in your hair, bouncing off your eyeballs. We actually ended up having to leave before we expected because of the ladybug mob. Probably just the time of year where they were hatching or mating⊠It was...
