What a lovely stroll through gardens tucked away in a quiet neighborhood in the the tiny town of Chase City VA. These wonderful gardens began with Lucy Hudgins’ love of gardening. Mrs. Hudgins was wife to Edward Hudgins, former Chief Justice of the Virginia Supreme Court. The 5 acres of gardens were established in 1929 and quickly became the focus of Mrs. Hudgins’ life work.
Her son, Commander William Henry Hudgins, expanded the gardens to what we saw today. William served as Personal Aide to President Truman as well as Admiral Carney, the Commander in Chief of NATO. Mr. Hudgins traveled extensively, and sent back treasures from around the world which were incorporated into his garden design. Wealthy friends of the family also gifted eclectic pieces of statuary for the garden.

There were only a few blooms but the statues and interesting nooks and crannies kept us delighted for 2 hours. A video from our...

The landscape with bubbling fountains, flowers, labeled trees, slate and cobblestone paths and warm greetings from the staff at the gift shop made this trip worth it. Note: Do bring some Deet/bug spray to help combat the mosquitoes. **Also, staff does not give museum tours after 3:00 p.m. The 5 acre garden tour is self-guided, after picking up a pamphlet with brief information about numbered objects in the gardens. You can use the pamphlet and map as a guide. The garden tour is $5 per person over 6. The guided museum tour is $10 per person. The museum was closed when we went, so we could not see inside. Tours are offered Monday-Friday 10-3. MacCallum More is peaceful, tranquil and beautiful. I would definitely visit again. I...
