We love Cheraw State Park! We have "cabin camped" 5 of the past 6 years and have loved the charm and nature of this gem of a state park. The cabins are of CCC vintage (1930's) but you would not know it because they have been renovated and cared for well. The staff members are personable and knowledgeable. Our annual kayak trek to the southern end of Lake Juniper is a thrill every time. I love the way open water changes and suddenly we are enveloped by towering Bald Cyprus trees and maybe have a chance to see an Osprey or two. One year my son and I tried to get to the headwaters and it was as if we were real adventurers. Pushing through ever tightening streams, until, I came face to face with a rather large water snake... We decided to turn back then. The park has nice trails, you might see the beaver or deer. We love the boardwalk at the North end of the lake. Amazing sunsets at the boat ramp! The cabins are well equipped with nearly everything you need. Just add food! Bring your own propane bottle for the grill if you can as the rental is a little steep. As of our visit in 2013, the beach is back! Many new benches (some swingers ! ) have been added to enjoy the scenery from. We usually visit Sunday - Wednesday and have always nearly had the whole Park to ourselves. Even after seeing the wonders of Alaska and Hawaii, we enjoy our little piece of Heaven a short...
Read moreI am basing my review on the park itself as the cabin that my family and I rented was very nice and exceeded our expectations. The scenery is beautiful and to be honest Cheraw State Park is a hidden gem and I say that as a resident of NC. The only issue that I have with Cheraw State Park is the inconsistency of the rules and regulations...especially those posted specifically on the website. We were going to take our golf cart based on the information that I pasted below directly from the website. My gut told me to call and verify that we could take the golf cart only to be told that they are not allowed. I'm not sure that I understand the logic on this one as everyone else (cleaning staff, park employees, etc.) was riding around on golf carts.
May we bring our own golf cart or do you rent golf carts?
On the golf course, carts are rented to golfers only. Private golf carts are not permitted on the golf course. If you are staying the cabins or campground you may bring your own golf cart. You must be a licensed driver to operate the golf cart, and they cannot be driven after dark. You must have all permits as required...
Read moreMemorial Day was a blast here! A little tight as far as the swimming area but overall fun. We rented the "Shelter On The Hill" for the day (10am-4pm) and it was great. They reserved the spot for us with a sign. We had a grill, multi picnic tables and a super close bathroom that was clean but there was pine straw in the sink.. idk why. Great view of the swimming area. It really feels like you have that whole place to yourself up there. The playground is super close as well. There were showers near the lake. Boat and kayak rentals weren't going because of the holiday but it is available other times. This place is really a little slice of heaven for a day. I will say the walk to the shelter was quite a walk! I wish we had a wagon or less stuff. Be prepared to walk a little bit. And then a walk to the swimming area. Perks of being out of the way from everyone comes with the slight downside of a walk. Also there were quite a few ants! Idk if they can spray or treat for them but we really had to be mindful with our kids running around. All in all the shelter was wonderful, the whole experience was great! We...
