This is what I love about hiking. The totally unexpected hidden gems you find right in your own backyard. Just a couple miles beyond Warren Woods State park on Warren Woods road you will find the Chikaming Township park and preserve. It has 6+ miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. Several of the trails meander through a forest area that borders a river. Trails are a combination of packed dirt, mowed grass, paved and handmade wooden and brick crossings in muddier areas. Kid friendly, dog on leash friendly and free. There are some hills here and in many places the signs will tell you at an intersection which path is easy and which is harder. Read moreWhat a fantastic set of trails for hikers and especially for mountain bikers. Everything is so well-marked. The volunteers who built these trails esp. the mountain biking ones have really created a gem. Bravo! You have signs at forks that mark the easy trails as well as the challenging ones - enough to get the pulse-racing for even the most hardcore riders. The scenery is stunning too, from rugged wooded trails with root ruts to ravines to pine forests to man-made hurdles like wood bumps and bridges, dips into streams to lake-side trails. About 1/3 of the pond, the third near fishing pier, was covered with algae. Sign says no swimming or wading. There was a very small area near water not covered with algae where fishing is possible.
