Great beach, we went on a Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. You can get a pass valid for a week for $25. Monday and a Tuesday were only slightly less crowded than the weekend. Plenty or parking though, and the beach and sea are very clean and beautiful. Surf was a bit rough our first two days, although kids were still able to swim under supervision. Last two days the surf was just great, enough to have fun without being dangerous. Landscape is amazing, so are the views. Wish there were a few more amenities, there were plenty of toilets, but the beach could have used more showers. Friendly crowds every day.
A few things to keep in mind. If you don’t mind walking 2-5 min to get to a toilet, park in between them as there will be less of a crowd in between amenities. On this same issue, if you don’t mind being in the unsupervised section of the beach (no lifeguards), head more towards the south of the parking to reduce crowds further. Keep in mind that there will be more fishing poles at the extreme south of the beach however, so if that is an issue a spot in the mid to south parking away from toilets is the best if you want to reduce crowds.
The visitor center is great, they have the kids ranger program, you can stop by and pick up the activities’ book for kids, if you return them by 4pm kids will get sworn in as rangers and get their badges (plus will have learned a lot about the fauna and flora of the island in the process).
Remember to bring your body boards, great beach to enjoy them with the kids. At low tide (morning and late afternoon when we went), you can walk far and still have water below your waist.
Staying after 4 is great also, as most people leave around that time and the beach becomes much quieter and enjoyable. Highly recommend...
Read moreNice beach. Always bring bug spray, the flys can be terrible. Close parking lot and ample beach area even on busy days. Visitors tend to crowd the areas closest to the parking lot naturally but if you're willing to walk up shore you can easily have an almost private experience. Ability to take 4WD vehicles on south end of the beach during certain times/conditions.
Sand is cleanish, bathrooms are decent. Water like most of the east coast, green/brown hues depending on weather. Lots of areas where the waves crash pretty far out allowing for enjoyment by kids as well. No attractions on the beach so great for anyone who enjoys a true beach day without any distractions.
Also worth mentioning that every time I've been to Chincoteague, I've seen a school of Dolphins swimming...
Read moreAssateague Beach in the Assateague National Seashore is a great laid back minimalist beach. You can see the wild ponies on the way into the island. There are bathrooms (larger permanent “porta potties”) and two ranger station/NPS buildings with gift shops. There is a bike trail that winds all the way back to the beach from prior to the bridge leading into the island. Being a National Park there are fees to get in. We have been going on family trips to this beach every summer for over 20 years now. It’s not as commercialized as most beach towns. There is shopping and lots of places to eat, including a lot of food trucks. Want a good get away beach this is the place. Check the rental companies, VRBO, or other AirBnB. There are many houses for rent...
