Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site is a historic site that commemorates one of the most important, but sadly forgotten battles of the American Revolution. It was here at the battlefield where Americans led by Nicholas Herkimer fought courageously against a group of Loyalists, and Native Americans. At the beginning of the battle Herkimer's men were ambushed and shortly thereafter Herkimer was shot in the leg. Though he had been shot he was still able to command his forces throughout the battle. Herkimer would die weeks later at his house. Though the Americans lost the battle they were ultimately able to prevent British forces from moving east towards Saratoga. Although thought of as a small battle, Oriskany is thought to be the most proportionately deadly battle of the American Revolution. The battlefield is well marked and there are tours. Tours last about a half hour and are very informational. The battlefield monument is one of the most memorable parts of the tour. Best of all this important historic site is free. This site is important in remembering those who sacrificed their lives during the...
Read moreSite of the Revolutionary battle of Orisjany where British soldiers and allied Native Americans ambushed American militia under Nicholas Herkimer in a gully as they were marching to Fort Stanwix (in modern-day Rome, NY) to lift the British siege. Much of the area is an open field with a very old, large monument to commemorate the battle which makes it difficult to picture what the battle was like. The most interesting part for me was the trail through the gully (a little bit of a slope down and then up on the east side of the park) where the ambush took place, where things are much easier to visualize. Geri g some background from signs, brochure, and the video of the battle will definitely help you understand the...
Read moreWe had an awesome visit to the Oriskany Battlefield with my son and the boy scout troop. We had a local guide who is a history buff walk us through all the history. We started at the front and he walked us throughout the entire battle and what happened where. He also had brought his replica rifle that the soldiers would have been using during the battle and let all the boys hold it and feel its weight. The boys had a blast and it is hilly so not good for those who are not very mobile. He had the boys march in line down one of the hills just like the soldiers did and we were transported...
