This is a really great hiking spot. Plenty of nature to admire here, but the reason I've given it a four-star is not the trail itself. To clarify: the trail is amazing and beautiful. Just one thing to look out for is that there's signs that plainly say: no shooting. Regardless of the signs, there's spent shell casings and litter found in the sandy areas. There's another location, not too sure if it's even connected to the Rome Sand Plains proper, but it's up the road and on the opposite side. I went there once and found more spent bullet casings and junk used as targets. With that said, you might hear gunshots periodically in the area. I visited three times and my first and second visits I heard gunshots throughout my time there. My third visit I didn't hear anything and that was toward the end of autumn in 2016. Stray bullets are dangerous, even if they're technically away from the trails. I'd suggest going here when it's colder and hopefully no one's there disregarding the signs for other people's safety.
