This natural refuge is filled with birds, turkey, and quail. I have personally seen all of the above, and river otter! Snakes of almost every kind abound here. Fishing is fair on the handsomely made lake. I have seen bucks galore, and does everywhere! Don't make any mistakes they know when hunting season begins! This is truly a get back to nature spot!    Read moreIt was a little sad to see that the once-staffed visitor center was abandoned, but the fifteen-or-so minute drive to the boardwalk that overlooked the lake was pleasant and the short walk to the boardwalk itself was wonderful. I've never before been in a forest (or forested swamp) where noises echoed, but they do here, and it was really something to experience!

Spent a couple of hours driving on the road (not paved at all places) that loops through the refuge while stopping at a few places (one was near the boat ramp on AR 77) to take pictures.
