Clarksburg is a BEAUTIFUL state park with absolutely breathtaking mountain lake scenery and sandy beach swimming!! The mountain pond/lake is SO CLEAN and amazingly WARM for swimming!! (I went with my husband and our dog in July 2020.) I highly recommend this campground!! The lake/pond is easy to get to from the campsites because there is a paved road leading almost all the way to the beach (then a gravel path to the sand part.) Or you can walk through the trails in the woods to get to another lake spot, but that part of the lake does not have trucked-in white sand or hard paths; it is the "foresty" side with flat rocks and grass leading into the lake. Also, the lake is VERY shallow! :-D (If you don't like deep, murky water, this IS the lake/pond for you!) I didn't swim all the way across, but another passing camper (grown adult) did swim it, and she said she thought it was only about 4 - 5 feet deep in the middle because she could stand up with her head still above water in the lake's center. The park staff are also very friendly and welcoming! They answered all of our questions and were friendly to our doggie, too. :) This park takes Covid-19 prevention VERY seriously and I really appreciate that! Only "every other" site/alternating sites are open to camp. There's no pollution or gross stuff in the lake, either. Parking lot by the lake is very big, easy to walk to or drive to, and parking spots by the lake are ample!! We camped at site # 09, in a basic tent site. -For reference, the site (# 09) was cozy, but smaller than other basic tent sites we've stayed at in Missouri (ie: Babler State Pk, Johnson's Shut-Ins State Pk, etc.), or Colorado (Rocky Mtn Natl Pk). But, Clarksburg does have BIG basic tent sites, too! -We just picked the 1st spot available, but there are bigger sites that can easily fit 2 tents + 2 large cars. -Site 09 was near the bathrooms/showers, but not directly across or next to it, which was nice and convenient. -The shower is spacious, has lots of hot water, a towel hook on the door, and a bench seat. Very nice! -There is also an outdoor "restaurant-style" (?) extension hose and large outdoor sink for washing dishes or quick rinse-off. It was nice to use the hose to rinse off our dog after swimming. -Our site fit our 6-person tent, the picnic table provided, fire pit, bear box, and some walk-around room, but just fyi we had to park our SUV (2020 Santa Fe) on a slant/up the hill slope to have more walk-around room. Still, it was a lovely spot with good shade, and comfortable to sleep at night! -Our site (Clarksburg # 09) was abt the same size as the previous site we stayed at in Savoy Mtn State Pk (was site # 14, in Savoy, MA). -Fire pits have a metal grate/grill provided, which is great. I do still give it 5 stars and highly recommend Clarksburg because of its stunning swimming lake, lovely forest trails, and clean...
Read moreWent for a one night stay with my partner and had a magical time! There were moss covered logs and rocks everywhere, a nice amount of trees between sites, and a lake which we were able to get glimpses of even though our site was not waterfront.
Because it was raining during our stay, most of the campground was empty and the staff were kind enough to let us swap sites (almost the whole place was vacant except a summer camp group up the road) and check out late which was nice to be able to take our time enjoying the morning quiet. This was actually the first time I heard an owl (a barred!) on a camping trip before!
We've camped at least twice a month for the summer, but this was certainly one of the most beautiful settings and nicest facilities. The bathroom buildings were very well maintained, super clean and not many bugs in there. The bathrooms are gendered, and each have two shower stalls. The handicap accessible stall has a seat built in with railings and a secondary shower head which is on a flexible hose so you can sit and bring the water where is is needed (really helpful for quickly cleaning muddy feet!). This means there are 2 shower heads total - and the hot water is free (as is customary at MA state parks).
It was cozy, private, and really lovely! If it were full, it might have been a little busier with the one bathroom building being shared amongst the whole campground, but at least with our site (#5) it still would have been very private being up on a bit of a hill and surrounded by trees.
A few other notes, there are grills over the firepits, water spigots throughout the grounds, a dishwashing station outside the bathroom, and lots of really cute red squirrels!
If you stay I hope you had as good of a time as we did, even through a...
Read moreClarksburg State Park is clean, well equipped, and staffed with great people. It's close to everything if you are looking to get out in the woods, go fishing, apple picking, or even visiting a local alpaca farm!
The sites are well placed, but not completely private...it IS a state park after all. The parks lake has limited water craft access, and also a day beach, pavilions and plenty of open space. Folks who think "camping" must have hot and cold running water and showers won't be disappointed either. The bath and shower facilities are cleaned twice each day, and they are well maintained. You won't be short of the necessary supplies in there, and you won't be afraid to sit on the seats.
Clarksburg State Park is highly recommended by people who know more about this stuff than I do, but I indeed do share their sentiment...it's a terrific state park. A true gem of Western Massachusetts for everyone who likes to get outside. GO THERE, and have an...
