Beautiful park, didn't like it so much that they tell you check in at 4 but you c as n actually come at 8 and pick your spot and if no one is on it you can occupie the site. The bath houses are way way way to far from a lot of the sites so all is good if you are near it or have a camper that you can use but they take in enough money to have a bathroom within so many feet of all the camp sites.,no one cleaned the restrooms during the weekend of Lakefest come on people, Also the bath house only has 2 showers so like I said unless you have a camper with a bathroom and shower you may be disappointed. We have stayed one camp ground down from this one and I must say because we are in tents we probably will not come here again unless we bring a camper. Another HUGE disappointed was no swimming area, come on now folks not everyone has a boat, we do but when it's a bunch of us we like to chill at the swimming area all of us enjoying the kids on the sand without climbing on rocks and rough brush to get to the water. My pregnant niece wanted to go to the water and I was scared for her to go over such huge rocks and brush to get to it so we went down the road for the day and payed 4 dollars for the whole family to swim at a nice swimming area, with a sand beach, picnic shelters, and a bath house with 4 nice clean showers and 4 toilet stalls. So for what it's worth I hope you read your reviews and listen to your guests. Like I said the park is beautiful, but when on vacation I want to have a little more leisure access and a better restroom/ shower situation. Thanks have a wonderful day , we had a bad experience last night once again so no me and my family will not be coming back Rudds creek we will always stay with you if not Buffalo Creek it will be for us! We will not stay some where we can't use there Boat docks! Forget it I...
Read moreA gem of a park - so far one of our top two (the other being Grayson Highlands) Virginia State Parks we've stayed. Kind of reminded me of Smith Mountain Lake SP, but in a less bougie area. Smith Mountain has a great beach and if you're staying in a cabin, you have access to your own dock, but the camp sites at Occoneechee are really hard to beat for $30 a night.
Without a doubt, get a waterfront site. We stayed on the smaller side of C-loop and our site was huge, close to the bathroom, and our neighbors were some distance away from us. It was quiet even on a holiday weekend. On the larger side of C-loop, there are sites with hookups, but also the spacing between campsites seemed a bit cramped for our tastes. Regardless, the waterfront sites here were also amazing.
Our kids loved the spray ground - which, even on a holiday weekend never felt overly crowded. They also loved playing on the two playgrounds, learning about the Occoneechee tribe at the visitor center, and catching (and releasing) all the fireflies that came out at night.
The camp store/visitor center has a great exhibit, but in terms of items for sale, it's a bit sparse. Also, as mentioned above, there isn't a sandy beach for kids, but you can swim off the shore, which is what we saw many people doing. We ended up exploring some of the nearby beaches in the area since are kids are still learning to swim.
A beautiful place. We'll...
Read moreThe "reservation" system sucks. You make a "reservation" then get there to find no reservation. Further, the website says that they cannot make site specific reservations, they will assign you a site when you arrive. I "reserved" a waterfront site only to find all the waterfront sites are "site specific only, not sure what privileged few get to reserve those, and we ended up in the woods after paying extra for "waterfront. " i was not a happy camper. Also, there is no place to fish, at the lake! The shore is lined with riprap. Good luck. The park is pretty but, for the money we shelled out, especially paying extra for non existent , "waterfront?" We could have gone to the mountains or down to NC and Kerr lake state park. Update.... Virginia state parks did hey in touch and refunded some of our money. We discussed the reservations, or lack thereof. They state that the reservations would've been posted at the park office. Sadly the park office is much further into the park past the campgrounds. Also if you are towing a travel trailer the park office is NOT somewhere you are going to pull up too. Picture, "dead end road, no turn around." If after hours reservations packets were posted there we were never going to find them and had no way to know about them. Even the camp hosts had no idea any reservations packets were there. Still, that's where they say they put...
