It's like being one with nature. When you go to the Algonac State Park you can camp with your tent or your RV and you have access to of course your typical electricity water bathrooms and even showers across m29 is the St Clair River where you can sit and enjoy the Freighters going by or choose to go fishing or even possibly go over to the small swimming area there either way while camping in the Algonac State Park you also have access to a viking walking path there is a bow shooting range there is also a skeet shooting range there are different areas as well two separate camping zones one right on the river another set more in the woods it is been a major stopping point for any and everyone who travels as the park is never empty unless it's closed which is very rare as even though we are in Michigan and it is a colder state they still tend to leave the park open throughout most of the coldest parts of the winter and there is also a very large camping area in the Summer where you do not have to pay you can just use the area but if you want a pavilion that you'll have to rent there are also barbecues and picnic tables if you're looking for somewhere to relax I have family time or just for no reason whatsoever if you're looking for somewhere to go something to do I would recommend the Algonac State Park if you are into the things mentioned above there's also boating of course because you're on the St Clair River but you're going to need to have your own boat so that'll make it a little difficult there is areas to rent some boats but not very many I hope this helps anyone who is looking into possibly going to a state park the Algonac State Park is a must literally people have come all the way from Maine Florida California Alaska even Hawaii I live here and I see the beautifulness of the area on the regular and not everybody gets to enjoy what we do out here it's very nice to have a small little city nothing major but big enough with some nice Country Roads which I recommend to any and everyone as a stress reliever and or just a good time you can't beat the back roads you can't beat The View can't beat the river can't beat swimming it's amazing I might brag a little because I do live here but I won't brag about the whole city cuz I technically live on the back side which is called Clay Township that's a lot more country and I love it the only thing I don't love is the way that it is starting to develop with a lot more homes going up and a lot of forest coming down that I do not like especially when there is already properties available that are open and ready that you good either move in renovate the home or tear it down and build what you want there are just too many of these areas and not enough people taking advantage of these opportunities instead they are paying for plots of land and fighting the city to gain access to even purchase said land so yeah it's a little upsetting but other than that I have to say the state park is amazing back roads can't beat them sorry so long there's just a lot to do even though it's a small town there...
Read moreAlgonac state park sites 213 (fifth wheel) 214(travel trailer) and 215 (empty) 216 is also empty in the background of 215 so dont go thinking it is just a massive site lol
As the state website says, yes on 214 we did need an additional hose, luckily we heeded the warning and were prepared. As a side note, a fair amount of the lot is located on the slide out side of the camper. Not bad for setting up and at least there isn't an obstacle blocking things but it does make the site feel smaller than other state parks once in place because it has a lot of wasted space on that side. Still plenty of room on the awning side to be comfortable but I thought it was worth noting for informational purposes.
Also the sewer setup is new and I am happy to say that the opening for the sewer connection is well below the level of the trailer so that it drains properly (unlike the last full setup we had at a non state park site).
For sure, 214 in particular, the parking pad is nice and level but it has a significant drop off to the lawn area of the site. Our 3 step unit is usually set quite short as our trailer does not sit insanely high off the ground. At this site our legs are fully extended and we had to put some 1 inch pads under the stair legs in order to get them to sit nicely. Still fits but the bottom step is a bit taller than most would like it to be, especially for someone with mobility issues (like my parents in the fifth wheel next door.).
None of this is meant to be a complaint, purely informational. Overall the site is beautiful, the agent at check in was personable, we had no trouble getting in our space (though there is a tree that goes right up against the back of the parking pad on 214 and it meant there was not enough room to park our truck in front of our trailer which is 30 feet from tip to tail.). The view of the water from these sites isn't amazing but it is there. If you are desperate to see the ships go by it can be done from the site or a short walk down the street leaves a decent view as well.
This page warned us of bugs at this park this year but so far it has not been bad. Just a few gnats flying around at dusk, but there are a lot of ants it seems.
Still overall I highly recommend this park and these sites are pretty solid all around. (P.s. of all these three sites, 214 is the only one with no natural shade at any point during the day). Also the shooting range is perfectly adequate and exceeded expectations. But still is far enough away from the campsites that it does not disturb anyone.
P.P.S. the cell phone service signal coverage area is fantastic. I am sitting on my site right now and have 2 to 3 bars of 5g...
Read moreMy boyfriend and I were not pleased with our experience at this state park. We were there from Thursday to Saturday. We were supposed to stay till Sunday but were so displeased we left. The first night we were there someone came at 4 in the morning from night fishing to drop their boat which woke us up. The second night, four to five campgrounds worth of people all came at once. Quiet time is at 10pm and we were right by the camp host. You would think the camp host or someone would enforce quiet time at 10pm. These people had kids at 10:30pm running around screaming and running by our tent while we were trying to sleep. Kids quieted down around 11-11:30 but the adults were all partying till 3:30am. We called the DNR four times and the first 2-3 times they went to their campsite and told them to quiet down. The forth time they said they would make sure they be quiet but just drove by. It was so bad my boyfriend and I took our dog and drove into an empty parking lot to try to sleep. You would think the park ranger after several complaints would tell these people either quiet down or pack up and leave. We went to the office the next day to tell them about our experience and told them we wanted to leave a day early. They told us we weren’t the only campsite that complained about these group of people. We asked if there’s any way we could get a refund for the day we’re not using and they told us no. We will never come back here again. In all of our years of camping we have never experienced such...
