Second time here in the past 5 years. My brother's name is on the Iraqi wall (PFC Kevin C Ott). Our dad passed away earlier this month and I wanted to go here to visit again, as I know it was a place he liked. It is the only memorial that I know of that has both the Gold Star Mother AND the Gold Star Father statues. As a Gold Star Sister, I want to thank you for this beautiful memorial to honor our lost, but not forgotten heroes! A must for this visit is to go in the building and look up at the ceiling of dog tags. Seeing that many hanging there is very powerful (unfortunately the building closed at 4:30 on this visit). This was the first time my 9 & 7 yr old grandkids have been to a monument. They found it interesting and they learned how to be respectful of the atmosphere and the monument itself. My family and I have visited it shortly after midnight on Memorial Day for the past two years. It is an inspiring and reflective visit. The displays and memorials are well lit, but the backdrop of the dark night sky rivets your attention on the displays and memorials themselves.
