  • The Discovery Center is a great place to see taxidermy animals and tons of info about the Refuge. It’s also a gateway to wood trails and dirt paths. There’s a great drive thru with signs so you can stop and read why that spot is interesting. There’s lots of wildlife and Salt Lake is worthy of a visit because you’ll pass the alligator pond. The lake is another great place to fish, launch a kayak or a canoe - no motorized boats allowed so its serene and brings in tons of cranes and storks. Fun place for kids and adults. Just 1/2 mi up the road, is another part of the Refuge. Go over the big bridge then make the immediate left turn on to 476, stay on the road where you’ll go under the bridge then back up and youll be at the FREE public fishing dock. Benches on the dock to sit on. There’s one small covered cabana picnic table. There’s 6 I think cement pull ups to drive your car to bayou edge. Very nice. PACK IN PACK OUT. Large portable toilet. And it’s the wildlife refuge so bring plenty of Deet, don’t Wade in the water as we have BIG alligators but we also have redfish crab croakers, snappers trout and the occasional dolphin. If you prefer it more rustic, just pull out of the parking lot and make a right turn. It will take you thru the little community and you come to iron gates saying Clay Banks fishing area. Hard gravel road, a few walk down sites- nothings improved - and a few sites you can park at but the fishing is great. PACK IN PACK OUT and Clay Banks has a number of gator visits so please do not let your children wade there!! This area closes at dark where the public dock is lighted for 24 hour use. Come make a day of it and you can always grab a burger at Marlin Marina or a snack in Demi John at Capt...

This is the entrance to the Big Slough recreation area. There's a 2.5 km hike here with 3 smaller loops built in. It was the perfect hike for my two kids, both under ten. There are bathrooms, plenty if parking, covered tables, a visitor center and clean bathrooms. The hike was nice we saw turtles and birds. Watch out thoughif youre hiking with kids, there are a lot of active ant hills on the main trail (grass trail) and the wild hogs have torn/muddied up parts of the trail which can be easy to trip on if you're taking pictures and not watching where...

Drove by this place all my life finally stopped by this year. This is a Huge area. After you pass the visitor center you can drive on gravel roadways to view nature in the marshes. I took the auto tour and passed our first exit, and it took a good while to be able to exit the one way auto trail. There are a couple fishing holes, but it is a long journey on the gravel roads. The fishing holes seemed pretty shallow probably best to bring kayak for these waters. This place is best for nature watching. There are many gators to see along...

A wonderful place to watch water fowls. The GPS location is actually just the entrance. The office building is a few miles further down. The office is closed due to Covid but there is a roadside kiosk for maps. I suggest taking the auto tour. I saw a good variety of birds in large numbers between stop 1 and 5. However, almost nothing for the rest of the stops. Maybe due to the season?

I really wanted to experience a Cajun Christmas by seeing gators, and I’m so glad we stopped inside. The volunteers were genuinely very sincere and helpful. We also got to pet baby gators! The staff recommended this one route for optimal gator spotting- we saw 4! Plus tons of cool birds! Very serene and peaceful, highly recommend visiting.
