A once thriving social nexus, North Shore Beach and Yacht club is now a ghost of the past. Like many sites along this stretch of the Salton Sea though, these ghostly locations are hi-definition screen shots, burned into time — environmentally abandoned, but thriving artistically. This is the perfect first stop for those road touring down the eastern coastline of the Salton Sea. A hypnotic sensory pleasure unique to this region of the world, and those who admire, and are inspired by, its distinct charms, strange attractions, and most beautifully eclectic locals and nomadic travelers.

The building looks almost brand new as does the parking lot and the picnic tables on the shore. As far as I can tell this is an all purpose community center. By all outward appearances this is a lovely location and building. My only problem with it (and it's a doozy) is the smell. The second you step out of the car you are slapped in the face with the pungent mix of rotten lake water and port-a-potty odor. No one will ever sit at those brand new picnic tables because it would be like eating in a sewer!

There needs to be more to explain about the social and environmental story behind salton sea. It is a fascinating story about the destructive nature of man. The place is eery, the smell from the now quite toxic lake is very very strong. The beaches are made of fish bones and scales- again because of the destructive power of man. There was not a single boat or person on the lake which is an amazing shame.

The North Shore Beach and Yacht Club is a fascinating, historical marvel, designed nautically by renowned modernist architect Albert Frey. When built in 1959, it glistened as the shimmering jewel of a popular, exciting marina on the vibrant, yet accidental Salton Sea aka, the "California Riviera."

In the 1970's heavy tropical storms, floods and heightened salinity levels dampened tourism, wreaking havoc and obliterating previously enthusiastic recreation, leaving in its wake the vibrant economic and social panache of the 1950's and 1960's.

This tidal wave of unfortunate circumstances ultimately caused the club's subsequent demise. Subsequently, the facility was shuttered in 1984.

Having fallen victim to abandonment, decay and vandalism, the iconic building was revived, renovated and restored by Riverside County in 2010, resuscitated briefly as the Salton Sea museum, then listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.

In 2024, the property has evolved to serve local residents as a social and community center, while continuing its journey as a fascinating,...

and yet, no mention of how the salton sea was formed by an accidental rerouting of the all-american canal/colorado river, and how The Southern Pacific Railroad saved Imperial Valley from certain flooding by stemming the flow of the river and canal water into the salton sink. a lot more needs to be told, alright! for years the salton sea has been freshwater, but now its base is saltwater. you can't put a freshwater body over an ancient ocean bed and expect it to be able to support marine and wildlife for any extended length of time- it's eventually going to become very high in salinity. this is the issue, more than pollution, although the lack of a suitable effluent affects nature's ability to clean the sea/sink and there are many agricultural polluters nearby.. BTW, most lakes around here show signs of ocean creatures and fish bones- nothing...

There is an always open front door and desk. It has restrooms, a gym, postal boxes for mail, another large room used for food giving for the community and summer classes for kids. Moreover offices in the upper part one is being used by KDI. Instead of the back pools there is an amazing view towards Salton Sea. Here zumba is offered too, it will start again on September 4th with a new instructor. This place can be used for party days. Nurses come so and so to do check ups for the community is easy off the Hwy 111 to the right and has water fountain with bottle filling. Front lady is...
