Enjoyed our Thanksgiving stay there. We rented one of the cabins. Got away from phone service and just relaxed. Cabins were nice and well cared for and clean. Grounds around the cabin sites were well maintained. Only a few other campers were in the area so it was quite. Which was nice and what we needed to get away from town for awhile.
The park has heated restrooms with showers which could use a little TLC but mostly was clean and fully operational. Noticed that one toilet needs some repair it was leaking from the base but was still operational.
Weather was nice Thanksgiving day and cooked over coal fire in traditional cast iron a simple meal.
Watched the sandhill crane flyover and listen to their calls. Sat out that night and viewed the stars.
Fished a little while. But didn't catch anything. But really wasn't expecting to. Wrong time of day. But gave me the ability to just sit and spin cast out a line and relax for a while which is all I really wanted to do anyway. Even if anything did bite I would have just thrown it back in the lake.
Very enjoyable holiday weekend.
It was the off season though so some of the park needed ground keep work. Some areas normally mowed were overgrown. But those were areas close to the boat ramp and in the cold months isn't used. We just drove around and surveyed these areas and didn't really get out of the car. Just wanted to look around a bit.
We did hike a short trail and saw some nice terrain. But the trails do need a little more development. They appear to be sort of in the beginning stages. Sometimes the trail can't be differentiated from a natural void or animal trail. But it seems to have a good start. But they do need a little more work.
Overall we had a good relaxing time.
Attempted to post a short video with the audio of the sandhill crane flyover and their calls. But I don't know if the video works or not. Sorry not a pro at this...
Β Β Β Read morePier is broke, can't get on it. no hot water at the restroom where our cabins are. no trash cans hardly anywhere. you need to throw your trash in your trunk and drive around to your find one. high tension lines running through it and power plants are your view. I don't know why anybody would come here I'll never do it again. the water has some kind of weird slime in it and it smells bad. that big bridge thing they show in the pictures doesn't exist anymore. it looks like it fell down 10 years ago. there's nowhere to get bait around here. none of the gas station sell it. the bait store is closed and rotten to the ground. this area is not a good area to vacation in. beware!!! they had dry poison sprinkled on the bed cushions in the cabin. all over the floor and all around the outside. the hiking trails or damn near inaccessible from all the overgrowth. you have to wait through cactus and spiny plants because they don't trim it back. wouldn't recommend it all. the cabin itself wasn't terrible, besides the poison I had to clean up that was everywhere. I think the state needs to come and audit this one. I don't believe the people that work here are doing a very good job. This place is falling apart. trash everywhere. broken furniture laying in the parking lot. downed power lines laying everywhere like they just didn't do any more work. they just left it there. this is an edit part. when I started trying to grill it dark I set up my lights ran an extension cord to the outside plug over by the water. the breaker wouldn't set it just kept tripping. no outside power whatsoever like it's supposed to have. the people that maintain this place are a joke. they should feel bad about taking...
Β Β Β Read moreThis is the worst State Park in Texas and possibly the United States. The Park Ranger and his staff should all be fired. The pictures on the website are very old and do not accurately depict the condition of this State Park. The picture of the bridge in the picture has to be about 5 to 10 years old because the bridge isn't even standing. The beach is horrible and the campsites have not been properly kept. You think for a Holiday weekend, especially July the 4th that the campsites would have been freshly mowed and prepared for visitors. There were all kinds of ants on the camp sites to include, fire ants and cow ants. There was an infestation of spiders not only on the campsites but in the bathrooms as well. I can deal with a few spiders here and there but when you pitch your tent and less than 2 hours later there is 7 -10 spiders on your tent, that is not good. Especially when I have a 2 year old and 1 year old. The showers and the bathrooms looked like a scene from Arachnophobia. It was just ridiculous. The swimming are was all grown up. I cannot believe that they actually charge people to camp there. They couldn't pay me enough to take my family there again. The park should be sued for false advertising because their pictures are misleading. It looks like the day after that picture was taken, the park was abandoned and unoccupied for 8 years. DO NOT TAKE YOUR FAMILY HERE! DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY GOING TO...
