I took my mom to Grand Valley because she was surprised to learn that Colorado produced wine. While I recognized Carboy from its restaurant locations in downtown Denver, I was hesitant to add their winery to our itinerary because it seemed "too commercial" in my initial perception...
Wow. I was wrong. The winemakers tour with Barbie changed my mind right off the bat. My mom drinks wine, but let's just say that she has a very economical taste. I told Barbie that we were new learners and she immediately matched my curiosity with guidance, helpful tips, obviously wine knowledge, and cool facts about the Grand Valley. She did not seem bored or tired of my endless questions, or annoyed by my mom's particular needs.
The tour itself was really neat too. We tried a bunch of wines (whites, rosé, reds, and bubbles) which were all very interesting and representative of the area. We learned about the grapes, the history of the area, and got to see the production line for bottling bubbles. Barbie took us around the vineyard and taught us a bunch about the propagation and management of the vines. We even tried some very ripe fruit straight from the vine (yum!). I loved learning about Carboy's approach to sustainability and renewal, as well as how they try to support the other winemakers and vineyards in the area.
Needless to say, Carboy was cool. I think Barbie really made the experience for me. I would absolutely come visit again, and I will! I feel more interested in the entire wine making (and appreciation) process now than ever. Thank you Carboy and Barbie!
PS, Carboy is very dog friendly -- more so than other vineyards in the area. They sell dog toys. Dogs are welcomed. I probably would have known this if I read the...
Read moreCame here for the branding known in Denver metro area with a group of girls for a bachelorette weekend. This was the 4th winery to visit. The pedicab drivers were happy to drop us off and take photos of us in front of the vineyard market. That’s where the cheer ends. Walking in several of the girls were told by the establishment that it wasn’t “looking for trouble” and we need to “calm down”. We immediately felt unwelcomed and walked across the street to Maison La Belle Vie and were welcomed with a open out door space and friendly welcoming staff. Carboys is a place for locals who want to dwell in the distain for tourist revenue. This place gets zero stars and zero dollars. Poor way to run a tourist establishment. If you want your consumers to fit in a mold maybe you should consider online sales only.
Reply to owners feedback: The group of us ordered 2 charcuterie boards and also a round of wine and then were told that “we will not serve you & you” referring to two native girls who were the most calm and collected of the group. We were riding on pedicabs with two amazing drivers who were tending to us as patrons who were consuming alcohol. I’m so sorry you have the audacity to determine our own abilities and safety but at the end of it, YOU are wrong. Good day...
Read moreCarboy has breathed new life into the old Garfield Estates, vastly improving both the wine and tasting experience offered on this gorgeous property. Their facilities are immaculate and service impeccable. Palisade proper has needed something closer to the "Restoration vibe" and Carboy delivered wonderfully. Play lawn games while listening to the band, or enjoy the stunning views from their rooftop patio. Order a board of snacks and ham it up with friends touring the wine trial in a fun and lively tasting room. There are many vibes to choose from and they are all good.
All of this is close to town and is thankfully open much later than 5 on weekends. There is a large variety of wines, (most of great quality) as well as beer and seltzers if you happen to just be tagging along with some vino enthusiasts. You'd be hard pressed not to enjoy yourself here. Best of all, Carboy's commitment to sustainability from vine all the way to your glass is commendable to say the least. The drought in the west is showing no signs of going anywhere, and I wish more folks in town would follow their shining example of making good wines while being better stewards to the land giving it to them....
