I spent a weekend in the northern Flattops long ago, and it was enchanting. Among the highlights were a sky utterly clear of light pollution, where when lounging in your sleeping bag the sky is filled with so many stars that it seems quite reasonable that you could reach up into the heavens and grab any star of the untold number you see.
But the best part for me was listening to the coyotes calling out to their comrades across the hills off into the wilderness night.
I rate this place 5 stars for the magical hold the place takes on you. I would caution parents of very young children, though. Wilderness is the true nature of the place, and you cannot lose you child for a moment. Wilderness places may be like that sometimes. Go there though. The lack of humanity's hold on the place is central to the charm that you feel.

My first hike there was the hike through Devil's Causeway which in itself is a super cool and scary trail that's only about 10-15 feet wide with sheer cliffs on BOTH sides that drop at least a few hundred feet in the lowest places, maybe close to 1K feet in the tallest spots!!
