The Leadville National Fish Hatchery in Leadville, CO, is a hidden treasure that earns a solid five-star review! Established in 1889, this historic siteβ€”the second-oldest federally operated fish hatchery in the U.S.β€”offers a fascinating glimpse into aquatic conservation. My visit was nothing short of delightful, blending education, nature, and serene beauty.

The hatchery’s grounds are peaceful, with the gentle sound of running water and stunning views of Leadville and the Arkansas River valley. The main hatchery building is impressive, and the staff were incredibly welcoming, sharing insights about the 250,000 trout raised annually to stock Colorado’s lakes and ponds. Kids will love feeding the fish for just a quarter, making it a family-friendly outing.

The nature trails around the hatchery are a highlight, perfect for a leisurely hike through subalpine forests with wildflowers and engaging nature signs. The trails are great for all ages, with water areas for kids to explore. The lack of crowds adds to the tranquil experience, ideal for those seeking a quiet escape.

Whether you’re a nature lover, history buff, or just passing through, the Leadville National Fish Hatchery is a must-visit. Its blend of history, wildlife, and scenic beauty makes it a standout...

Come here every time were camping in the area. It's free and the kids love it. Bring quarters to buy fish food to throw for the fish. There are huge fish in the pond near the building and in all the troughs (no clue what they're really called) there are TONS of smaller fish. And don't worry about going during business hours, most all the fish are outside so it doesnt matter. One time we went inside when they were open and the kids couldn't have cared less. Small museum/history room and some indoor tanks but most were roped off. The outside is all you really need to see.
