Wonderful museum!! From the highway it appears to be a bunch of dilapidated buildings, and it's only when you enter the parking lot that you learn there are over 500,000 artifacts from the Old West in this little "town". There are 27 buildings and tours (lasting about 2 hours) are led by knowledgeable volunteers. Ron was very good at answering our questions. We toured an old mining cabin, a German Lutheran Church built in 1913, a schoolhouse with a working bell, a general store, dentist's office, a mercantile/post office, a hotel with a beautiful cherry bar salvaged from the former Clipper Saloon in Telluride, a blacksmith's barn, a doctor's office, a jail, and much, much more. Each building contains period pieces, and the Old West is tangible everywhere you look. It was fun to guess what some of the items were. (See if you can spot the electric curlers and cannonball safe in the attached photos.) Great for kids and adults alike! Definitely planning a return visit.

We have traveled this nation extensively and we love to visit museums. This is one of the most extensive and complete collections of Western America we have seen. The buildings, artifacts, knowledgeable and kind guides and learning environment is incredible. Our children were just as enthralled as we were by the wide variety of antiques and history lessons. We are big history buffs, but learned and saw so much! This is a absolute must-see stop! Worth a trip to Montrose simply for this museum alone. We feel lucky we “stumbled” upon it!

If you’re on the fence about visiting this museum, definitely do it, and definitely get the guided tour! This was an unexpectedly fantastic and amazing museum! Our family really enjoyed our time here. I would 100% recommend getting the guided tour for a few more dollars - you learn so much more and go in many of the buildings you can’t go in on a self-guided tour. Jim was SO knowledgeable and we went early in the morning (about 8:30/9am on a Wednesday) and ended up having a private tour for about 1.5 hours. Jim knows SO much about everything and had an answer for every single one of our many questions about the artifacts. I thought this was going to be more of a “road side attraction” type place, but it turns out Mr. Fike, the collector/curator of all of the items, is an actual renowned archaeologist and everything is historically accurate and original. It’s like stepping back in time and seeing things exactly how they were in the late 1800s. Plan on spending at least two hours here for the guided tour + time after to walk around and see the additional buildings. If you like to read everything and are interested in history, you might want to spend more time than that - there is a lot of very cool stuff to see (including a...

Call before you go since they don’t know how to update their website, drove 6 and a half hours through snow in the mountains to laugh at me when I pulled in and say they were closed. Update: My issue is not that you booked a private event, it’s that it was not stated anywhere, the point of a website in my opinion is so I should not have to call, this was my first day off with my family in 4 months, this is the one thing we all decided to do, I pulled in and a lady said you were closed I said are you serious we just drove 6/1/2 hours through the snow to get here, she literally laughed at me, laughed in my face. So I went to a gas station and called and whoever answered told me it was my fault and that it was posted all over the web sight that I was currently looking at, she was very adamant I was just wrong and it was my fault. Unfortunately I have no idea when I’ll Have a day off that coincides with my family again, military makes it hard, and the fact I was laughed at just rubs salt in the wound. It’s a shame because everything I had heard was so positive...

The employees/volunteers are absolutely beyond wonderful but I must admit, Mr. Colley truly made this a special stop for me. I’m so grateful for the experience, history lessons and the ability to see/discuss the one and only Butch Cassidy’s saddle. Incredible collection of artifacts; if you often find yourself staring at things too long in curiosity- honestly just plan to spend more an easy 2-3 hrs here (we spent about 3 and could have easily stayed another hour) Never seen such a large collection of varying types of historic equestrian gear in one place; as a nerd about equine, tack makers and their histories- I was in heaven. If you pay attention you’ll even notice they have a Sears- Roebuck catalog saddle in one area… then a Sears Roebuck kit house just across the grounds. How fun that was for me☺️ Don’t miss this literal tresure, you’ll be disappointed you did!! Thank you to all the amazing staff and volunteers I hope this attraction lives on for...
