If you are heading to Uncompahgre Peak, this must be the hike starting point. It requires 4WD ( and be prepare for 2 stream crossings) but most 4WD can do it in normal weather. Starting from 2WD trailhead adds 4 miles of no-fun hike in each direction doubling the elevation gain to reach the peak. If you are not trained for mountain hikes just getting the trailhead will make you tired (thus do not shy to hitchhike if you have started at 2WD). The trail to the peak is relatively easy with accurate preparation - weather-wise closing, refillable water bottle, rains shield poncho, some snacks, at least a minimal emergency medication set. The elevation is high, the weather changes are fast, and the frequent thunderstorm forecasts should not be ignored, but in reward, the trail offers fantastic views along the route, especially from the top. Started the trail at 7am July 31, reached the peak at 11, get back to...
Read moreBeautiful area, would rate this 5 stars, except for the bathroom situation. Great job on road improvements, still need a Subie or better to get up there. Road is 1 lane so look ahead for other vehicles and note where pullouts are. I encountered 3-4 vehicles up and down. There is an outhouse, but it's been nailed shut for at least 2 years. Unfortunately, this has resulted in people leaving TP on the ground around the nearby trees. One particular stand of trees is fairly gross. I hope the FS gains the resources to reopen the outhouse. That aside, it's still a beautiful area and nicely maintained trails to Uncompahgre and other areas. Lots of nearby 13ers too, if you're into...

This spot is a grm becaude it is far less visited by locals and tourists than the Maroon Bells, Telluride, Apen, or other mountain destinations while providing natural beauty on oar with or even better than the more...
