Hiked here for the first time last Tuesday. Was the only person hiking the Pawnee Buttes Trail at 7:30am. Saw five campers, four hikers and many, many birds during my two-hour adventure. Debated not coming here based on the variety of negative reviews and the protective trail closure. Grateful that I explored this space anyway – there's a delightful, open energy here. Overall Experience: This isn't your typical Colorado hike and this space isn't for everyone. If you enjoy chill trails in the middle of nowhere, buffalo grass and bird chirps, you'll love it here. The horseshoe shaped trail will take you right up to the two buttes, which are spectacular to see. Road Conditions: You'll drive for about 10 miles on dirt/gravel roads. They're in pretty good condition with only a few washboard moments. You'll probably be most comfortable in a high clearance vehicle, but you could safely drive here in a Jetta. Trail Closure: The signs are very clear about where you can't explore and thankfully, it's just one section of the Pawnee Buttes Trail, so it won't impact your overall experience. Private Land: The private land warnings are around the second butte and don't impact the overall trail. If I owned something that beautiful, I wouldn't want people climbing on it either. Oil Rigs & Wind Turbines: From the trail, you can see an oil rig in the distance, but it's not on the trail and you don't actively hike near it. There are also quite a few wind turbines in the opposite direction that add to the open plains allure. Shooting Range: I didn't hear this when I first arrived, but when I left I did hear some "pop-pops" in the distance. It didn't see anyone shooting and it didn't sound close to the trail, so it never felt like my life was in danger.

Absolutely a hidden gem! We wanted to go camping last minute and since this is the first spat of warm weather in Colorado since last October, everywhere we checked for a last minute spot was full. We scanned the internet for some "off the beaten path" and found dispursed camping at Pawnee Grasslands and I can not believe I've never heard of this before. The dispursed camping is spread out and spacious giving privacy hand in hand with incredible views. Of course, as with any grasslands, it was windy but that just improved our experience really. We barely saw any people and those we did see were few and far between. Apparently we aren't the only people living in Colorado that had no clue this place existed! 5 stars, we will return! We did bring a converted bus, and it was passable but I do Recommend a high clearance vehicle to those wishing to explore the dispursed camping. Highlights Dispursed camping Reserved camping Toilets at grasslands entrance Pet friendly on leash Recommend high clearance vehicle Windy Quiet Peaceful

I arrived on May 6, 2021 and it was initially pleasant. Overnight, the winds began to pick up and for the next two days solid, the wind was a steady 30 mph with gusts well over 50 mph. I should have known this was probably a windy place since there are giant wind turbines everywhere. And then it started to rain and was forecasting snow, so I packed up and left. The campsite itself is decent, with several sites right in the same area, spaced out by 100 to 200 yards. If you like wind, then this is your place to camp. There are good views of the Pawnee Buttes, all two of them. I would say this is a good spot for an overnight on the way to someplace else.

WARNING: (Read in full before even contemplating coming)

WARNING! CURRENTLY PARTS OF THE AREA ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS! HEED WARNINGS AND USE EXTREME CAUTION!

THIS AREA IS BECOMING EXCEEDINGLY MORE DANGEROUS. IT SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN AND HAVE ALL FIREARMS COMPLETELY BANNED! IT IS NEAR CERTAIN SOMEONE IS GOING TO BE KILLED IN THE NEAR FUTURE!

FAILURE TO UNDERSTAND COULD RESULT IN SEVERE BODILY INJURY OR DEATH. RECOMMEND AVOIDING AREA! BY VISITING, YOU'D KNOWINGLY BE RISKING YOUR LIFE!

IF YOU MUST GO, USE EXTREME CAUTION AND REMAIN ON CONSTANT HIGH ALERT! READ AND UNDERSTAND THESE MINIMAL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS:

  1. NEVER visit the Pawnee Grasslands by yourself

  2. DO NOT bring children/ anyone under the age of 18 here. You will not only be endangering your life but theirs as well

  3. DO NOT bring pets

  4. DO NOT stop, or park in valleys, low-ground, or areas where you cannot see your surroundings

  5. DO NOT drive, stop, or park in areas where you cannot be CLEARLY SEEN by others in all directions

  6. Always know who is around you and where. Stop, look, and listen frequently

  7. Wear very noticeable clothing (orange-red vest/ bright hunting clothes)

  8. Remember exactly how you got where you are, closest roads, and ways to exit quickly in an emergency

  9. Always trust your gut/ feelings. If something seems off or wrong, it probably is

  10. Make sure others are aware of your location and what you're doing the entire time!

  11. ALWAYS have a charged cellphone on you. 11-A) Make sure everyone else in your group has a phone on them at all times too 11-B) Make sure you stay in areas where you have service to call 911 in emergency!

  12. Know that you are a long ways away from any town/ city. There are no stores and few people around!

  13. Know that there are no hospitals or any emergency services anywhere close to your location. The further you go, the further away you are! Its a minimum of 40 min to the closest hospital. At least 30 minutes to the closest police station. There are absolutely NO EMERGENCY SERVICES ANYWHERE CLOSE TO HERE!

  14. Bring emergency supplies. Including first aid kits, medicine, plenty of water, some food, blankets, extra clothes, spare tire, etc.

Been coming here around 15× a yr for nearly 25 yrs! I know this area very well! There is a ton of open space. I come here to get away from the city and shoot all my guns. I love the area, always have!

They recently constructed a good sized range suitable for dozens of people to use at any time! But can also shoot basically anywhere else too.

But recently this entire area has turned into a completely unmonitored, reckless wasteland for criminals, illegal immigrants, and for countless ppl who have absolutely NO BUSINESS OWNING OR SHOOTING ANY GUN, EVER!

There is absolutely NOBODY AT ALL monitoring here! IT'S GOTTEN SO BAD HERE NOW, THAT I NO LONGER FEEL COMFORTABLE OR SAFE, IN ANY SENSE OF THE WORD, EVEN JUST DRIVING ALONG THE OUTSKIRTS!!

THE ENTIRE AREA IS SO UNSAFE THAT I WON'T EVEN CONSIDER COMING BACK AGAIN!

Its very sad. BUT ITS INSANE TO RISK LIVES at a place that's this lawless and unsafe!

I've had bullets fly past my head, loaded guns carelessly pointed at my bro and me some with fingers on the trigger! Ppl driving around shooting from cars. Shooting signs, up in the air, not using backdrops. Some don't even look to see if it's clear to shoot!

I've seen ppl throwing clay pigeons by hand at the range in all directions and shooting. Which is why you can't shoot shotguns there.. ppl shooting across roads, shooting windmills, shooting at cattle and their guards.

Yesterday watched 3 punks come and start/continue shooting while ppl are down range!! The person shooting right next to them was putting a new target 50 yards out and they just start shooting with rounds literally hitting feet from his damn head! JUST THINK ABOUT THAT! THEY WOULD WALK DOWN RANGE WITH PEOPLE SHOOTING POWERFUL DEADLY WEAPONS RIGHT NEXT TO THEM WITHOUT ANY NOTICE! SHOOTING ACROSS 8 LANES AT MY TARGETS!

SOMEONE IS DEFINITELY GOING TO DIE HERE SOON 100%!!...

LEAD bullets should NEVER be shot, especially at a National Grassland!

  • Please ONLY shoot LEAD FREE bullets with lead free primers.*

Allowing lead bullets to be shot at this Grassland is a crime against humanity, wildlife, plants and nature.

US Forest service reps here... you should be ashamed of your purposeful, reckless destruction of the environment, and killing of wildlife! You are the ones allowing it to continue...

** A mandate is needed. Lead free ONLY on all federal/ national land.**

I am a hunter, and not a fairy or hippie and I don't take this lightly.

There are copper bullets on the market, and other options besides Lead bullets, a known carcinogen and poison!

Only the uneducated or complete idiots would shoot lead bullets, especially at such a Beautiful place...

.. To destroy the environment and at the same time POISON themselves, all fish, animals, and wildlife in the area is TRULY Selfish and WRONG!

** Please think about this... When you shoot a lead bullet, atomized lead ejects from the action and muzzle of your gun the second you pull the trigger. It ends up all over you when you shoot, but you can't see it.

When your lead bullet hits target more lead is atomized, and lead shrapnel ends up everywhere; in the animal , or in the target, and all over the ground!

What do you think happens next?..

The target lead is rained on and ends up washing into creeks, rivers, lakes, and in animal and human drinking water! Which then contributes highly to human and wildlife mortality rates and quality of life!

**Please think about what you are doing before you shoot!

  • Please shoot LEAD FREE bullets with lead free...
