Atterbury-Bakalar Air Museum — Attraction in Columbus

Wonderful, free local air and military museum overseen by docents who love their museum. Easy, free parking and handicap accessible. AC in building is good. If your knowledge of Bartholomew County/Indiana military history is limited, beef it up with a visit to the Atterbury - Bakalar Museum. Good for families and all ages to see a few artifacts. Take time to watch the videos on the connection with Camp Atterbury, Muscatatuck and the Indiana National Guard. For families connected to the formation of Camp Atterbury, there is an informative movie that discusses Atterbury's inception and lists the names of families relocated in just weeks at the camps inception. What an awesome place to visit and learn about the aviation history of Columbus, Indiana. Volunteers have done a phenomenal job of creating displays, videos, and other items to help display artifacts and other aviation items. Currently, they are in the process of completing work on a C-119 that was purchased, partially disassembled, trucked to Columbus, reassembled, and then put on display in front of the Museum. There's a lot of history in this building and the volunteer that gave us the tour was very knowledgeable. There are many paintings, uniforms, displays, 1:8 scale plane models, a presentation room to watch short films and more. A great place to stop by.
