I am always willing to support a nature refuge. This one happens to be free, so we made sure to stop by the gift shop to make a donation and buy some small gifts. They have a huge section on the history of the refuge from back when bombs were produced there, and stories of the women who worked in the factories during the war. They also have plenty of information on the natural history of the area, and information about what wildlife can be seen in the refuge.

We visited in Winter but still saw tons of birds (mostly raptors!), coyotes, prairie dogs, deer, and bison! The wildlife drive is great, especially in very hot or cold weather, but there are also tons of trails where you can get out and walk around. I'm excited to come back here during the shorebird migration...

It was a really relaxing and nice drive. Love that this is so close to the city. We felt like we had escaped and traveled much farther than we actually did. Currently the grass is super green and the back dropped of the snow capped mountains was a 10/10 for me. There was also some parts where you could see Denver’s downtown skyscrapers. We saw so many buffalo but i really liked this solo guy that was roaming freely away from the rest. Definitely worth checking out the visitor center is super clean and great to visit to used the restroom etc before taking your tour. Only disappointment was that there was a lot of trails that were closed off wish i could have explored a little more on foot especially...

My 2 kids and I arrived in Denver a few hours before my wife. We had a rental car and time to kill, so we did this free drive. It was awesome! We saw our first herd of bison and my kids were thrilled (so was I)! Definitely worth checking this cool place out if you have the time.

Edit: we went back with my wife as we had a little time before we needed to be at the airport. We drove almost the whole loop, slightly disappointed because we'd talked it up about the bison, but saw none this time. Then we came around a corner and there was a whole field of them! We pulled over and enjoyed listening to the bison and watching the little red dogs follow their moms around. Another...

There is also fishing and hiking at the park along with some Jr. Ranger programs for the kids. Park hours are sunrise to sunset fall/winter/spring and summer hours are sunrise to 8pm. #thingstodoincolorado #thingstodoindenver #daytrips

A few short days ago my friends and I were trying to kill time before our flight out of Denver. Wildlife Drive at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal popped up as a fun activity to try. After committing 45 minutes of driving without doing any further research, we pull up to discover that the Wildlife Drive portion of Rocky Mountain Arsenal was temporarily closed for road work. We were shattered. They deprived us of seeing a buffalo, so out of spite we decided to eat a buffalo. That's when we found Ted's Montana Grill and let me tell you it was the best tasting bison burger I've ever had. I recommend the Red Rock Burger. Revenge never tasted better!
