So yes we enjoyed the rail rider but wouldn't do it again at this same location due to the crazy price (views are decent but not great). It's just too costly for what it is. The first leg just seems to be a way for them to lengthen the time you're there. We were 3 people so we needed a 4 person cart. (Cost $148.00)
Here are the actual deets: You get the introduction and board about 15 minutes after your scheduled time. You ride about 10 minutes to the first get off and turn around which also takes about 10 minutes. This entire part is wooded. You stand on the side of the track while they do this (there are a couple picnic tables if you need to sit).
Now you ride back to where you started. You hop off while they push your cart across the road and get back on (this is quick). Then you ride to the opposite end which takes about 20 minutes. The first half is wooded and the second half is fields and a trestle over the river. Then you get off while they turn you around. Again, about 10 minutes and then ride 20 minutes back.
There is a basket on the back of each cart so you can bring drinks, phones, etc. Also, there are umbrellas in case of rain. I would not want to do this if it was buggy out, the wooded areas would not be fun. The ride is smooth and easy to pedal. If you are totally out of shape your legs will feel a bit tired by the end so go easy getting off the cart! Also, the areas where you disembark are uneven terrain, the first spot had a big hole in the ground covered by gravel that several people almost ate it stepping into it (including my elderly father). When I mentioned that they should put a cone over it the kid said that he tries to fill it with rocks but "animals at night keep digging it out". Hmmm,...
Read moreJust got through with a scenic ride with the family. Overall, I'd recommend trying this out, especially if you have little ones that love the outdoors.
They said it would be about two hours total, but we timed out exactly one hour for the just over six miles of riding. About 15 minutes was spent getting us ready to go and another 20 or so between the two stops (when they turn the carts around).
I remember saying, I wish it was longer. However, at the end, I was glad it was done because the pedaling does wear you down after a while.
At first, I thought you could go at your own pace and enjoy. Unfortunately, if there are multiple carts (we had about 6 families), you're at the mercy of their speeds. That being said, we were never rushed, but you're constantly scanning to see if you're going too slow or fast.
If you're looking for an amazing scenic ride, you'll probably be disappointed. Its mostly woods and a pass by of a farm and a river.
But, its not really about the scenery, its about the experience. I'd say it's like riding a recumbent bike, but its not. The feeling of gliding along the rail is quite unique. And, lets face it, there's nothing like this around.
I'd say the main downside is that, for the money, I feel like there should be a bit more. You arrive, ride, and leave. Maybe an included lunch in the woods or a commerative keychain or something to remember the experience more would help.
I say this, but the business is barely a few weeks old. I'm sure they're still working on perfecting the biz out.
In conclusion, if you're looking to take the kiddos out for something fun and different, this is perfect. Just remember that its a bit pricey for something that's over...
Read moreMy fiancé surprised me with this morning activity. There are different time slots throughout the availabilities the place has for customers. We chose the morning slot at 8:30 am. The staff was mostly young adults; however, they were so friendly and bubbly!
There are a couple of recommendations and tips for first-timers: Come EARLY: my husband and I almost missed our opportunity because we woke up late. Thank goodness though that the staff allowed us in after showing up 5 minutes late. The scenic rail riders website says if you come late. You won’t be able to get on. They truly mean it because they start with an intro video and rules when taking the trail.
Dress appropriately: depending on the time and season you’re coming to visit, I recommend to dress appropriately. The morning was really cold and foggy, so I recommend to dress warm and possibly bring a fuzzy blanket for you and the person your riding with to make the trip more pleasurable. Each bike has their own umbrella for those rainy days!
Choose the morning or the evening slots: I say this because mornings and evens are so unique because of how the light hits autumn leaves, so it makes the experience authentic.
Come during the peak of fall: my husband and I came when the leaves were mostly gone from the trees. However, they added so much more warmth and color on the ground so no complaints!
Use the bathroom beforehand: scenic rail riders have a porta potty, but if you don’t like those, I recommend using your time wisely to make sure you have a comfortable experience. I noticed that when you ride back. There are no stops for...
