If you’re looking for an easy hike right in town, this is the place for you.
The trails are VERY flat here and consist of packed sand. It’s so smooth and flat here, you could probably push a baby stroller through here. ;-) The paths average 6 to 8 feet in width. Not tree roots crossing the trails, or stumps, or logs blocking the trails.
I didn’t see a single piece of trash or any dog poop on the trails. But they allow horses on these trails, so there is some manure – just a little bit though.
It gets pretty quiet on the trails, even though it's in the middle of town.
Most of the trails are laid out in a grid format, kind of like city streets are laid out. Signage is abundant and trails are clearly marked. I can’t imagine how someone could possibly get lost out here.
I was able to get a 7.4 mile hike, even though I didn’t hit all the trails. I’d estimate there’s a total of 10 miles of trails out here. The most elevation change I was able to get was 33 feet over a stretch of one mile, so as I said – very flat!

Read moreWG Jones State Forest is truly a gem for anyone looking to escape the everyday rush! As someone who lives near The Woodlands, I can say it's incredibly convenient to have such a peaceful retreat just a stone's throw away. The wide walking paths are a real plus – they make for comfortable strolling, whether you're out for a leisurely walk or getting in some exercise.
What really sets this forest apart is the sheer number of trees. You're completely enveloped in nature, and it's amazing how quickly you forget you're so close to a bustling urban area. It feels like a true escape.
Kudos to the Texas A&M Forest Service program for the fantastic job they do maintaining the area. The trails are always in great condition, and the whole forest feels well-cared for. If you're looking for a beautiful and accessible place to walk and reconnect with nature in the Woodlands area, look no further than WG Jones State Forest. You won't be...
Read moreThere are a ton of trails here. It's very peaceful, very quiet, and easy to avoid any crowded areas, which there generally aren't. The fishing is not as good as it was before, maybe due to the drought in 2022, or the freeze at the end of 2022, but the ponds in the back are crystal clear and you can see other wildlife. If the main parking area is full, there's other parking further down, just try to leave areas in case anyone comes with a horse trailer. The park is overall very clean, there is minimal litter. People are friendly, I often see people walking dogs. The forest coverage is great, you can really get away from noise and enjoy the outdoors. It's a great place to walk, and very quiet in most areas. Definitely a nice place to enjoy some...
