We've stayed in rental cabins before, our taste is certainly towards something quiet, remote, comforts of home and needs a hot tub. We're from the Chicago suburbs so I wanted to make a quick getaway weekend for my fiance's birthday. 2 nights , so it had to be under 6hr drive for optimum enjoyment. Our usual rentals in Southern Illinois were booked (waited to long to book) So I set off to find something different. And boy did I find it. I was able to book about 3 weeks or so away from the trip date the Solitude cabin. By the sound of things it was right up our alley. We hadn't been anywhere below Northern Indiana before so I thought we'd give it a try. Booking was very easy (although I prefer secured online booking, I made an exception for this cabin doing reservations over the phone) I called talked to Bridgette. She gave me clear instructions and information. They will mail you a contract you will sign. Being such a short time frame instead of mailing it back, we just dropped it off at the main house before our stay (called ahead first before drop off). Drive down was about 4 hours. Scenic views, not bad at all. Directions were easy to follow. They send some incase you don't want to print them off.
Cabin Solitude right off the bat was just as its name. Quiet. secluded. The only thing you hear is the occasional plane, squirrels, and deer. Which we saw 4 does right off the back porch the first morning! The view from any angle is gorgeous but what hits you is the scene presented from the front porch. Overlooking the steep path down to their private and stocked lake ( my fiance loves fishing and we will be back to try it out when its not frozen over!) As it's near xmas they had a lovely little lighted tree and wall/table accents for the season. A great touch. I always love sitting in the dark with the glow of xmas lights on. Comfortable and plentiful seating. Everything really for the comforts of home. The only little thing was that they forgot to leave a dish sponge but thankfully we had one in the car. The stairs up to the loft ar steep so it you have bad knees etc. it might not be the best cabin for you. Bed was so comfy, squishy pillows and comfortable firm yet squishable mattress. Bathroom is right down the stairs and is very accommodating. Tv/dvd player was great other than the guide for the channels not having show info so it was a guessing game as to what was on. But we didnt watch much anyhow.
What made it really great? Hot tub off the back porch with a nice view, porch level so you can step into it. Sitting in the tub on a quiet, cold, dark, winters night was just what we needed to recharge the overworked suburban batteries. That and having the gas fireplace going while we were in the cabin.
I like that about 20 minutes either way you have something to do. Nashville, IN was so fun! It's a craft show in town form. We spent about 4 plus hours walking from shop to shop. So many beautiful decor, gifts, yummy food, etc... Nice that I could start my xmas shopping. It's a on the little pricey side but its work it to support local mom and pop businesses and artists. Plus most of the items are guaranteed for life.
Bloomington is a bustling college town, so we only went to get groceries at Kroger, then we stopped to eat at Avvers pizza. It's buffet style pizza but they throw in artisan pizzas plus they have 6 local beers on tap. Very yummy indeed. And for 9.99 a person it was well worth it. Very family friendly.
Overall, we had a wonderful trip and cant wait to come back and stay in the cabin and visit more sights...
Read moreWe absolutely loved our stay at the Solitude cabin! The beautiful, secluded setting truly felt like an escape. There are a few tips that may help future guests have a smoother experience. First, we recommend arriving during daylight. There’s no traditional check-in, and while the little green signs guide you, they can be hard to follow in the dark. A 4WD vehicle is a must—the roads are narrow and can feel a bit tricky.
We also suggest bringing extra beach towels for the hot tub, as only two are provided, and we found it more comfortable to have fresh ones each time. Additionally, we wished there was an option to adjust the hot tub temperature, as 102 degrees was a bit too warm for longer soaks.
A few other notes: there’s only a small bathroom mirror, so plan accordingly. The gas fireplace timer only stays on for 25 minutes, and although the dial allows you to set it for 60, it automatically stops. The ticking noise bothered my husband a bit, and when the fireplace was on, there was a noticeable gas smell upstairs. One thing we would have liked is a curtain for the front deck door to give a bit more privacy at night.
One of the highlights for us was the paddle boat they offer to guests—it’s more like a small pontoon, which made for a very comfortable and enjoyable experience on the water.
On the plus side, the kitchen is very well stocked with high-quality plates, silverware, and cookware, which made meals easy and enjoyable. The smart TV on a swivel mount was a nice touch, and we appreciated the option of Direct TV. The bed was extremely comfortable, with soft sheets that added to our relaxation.
Overall, we loved experiencing the pure beauty of this family’s property and appreciate their generosity in sharing it with others. This cabin is a gem, offering comfort, beauty, and a chance to...
Read moreWe arrived late in the afternoon on Sunday to the Antler Cabin. My girlfriend and I were planning to get away for 3 days to work remotely, hike and just be in a quiet environment for a few days. When we arrived at the cabin, it was the first time we realized there was no wifi/internet. This was not advertised on the website. It was never mentioned in any phone calls we had. It was not on any paperwork we received or signed. This cabin costs $300 per night. This is not an "off the grid" situation. This is expensive and something as simple as WIFI should have been a basic service/amenity provided for this kind of money. We had directtv with 700 channels we could care less about. Why wifi/internet was unavailable nor mentioned at any point along the way was confounding to us for this kind of expenditure. Needless to say, we had no choice but to leave the next morning. When we called Mary, we sought two remedies. First, could we move to a different cabin with WIFI available (none were available but we were willing to pack up, stay on the property, and keep our money and goodwill with this vendor). No other cabins were available. So we asked for a refund of one night. This was denied and Mary's answer was that we should have asked about WIFI when we signed up for this experience. In other words, there was not shared responsibility that Antler Log Cabins could have also ADVERTISED this clearly or said something themselves when we signed up or during the couple of phone calls we had along the way. It's a beautiful cabin. A beautiful property. But once they have your money and you feel misled or less than satisfied in any way, good luck working with Mary and her team for any kind of fairness in the...
