Definitely recommend this hike as it follows the falls of Van Trump Creek and terminates at the spectacular Comet Falls. The trail is relatively steep and scrambly in areas with a couple of bridges and a steep staircase to navigate - you should be of reasonable fitness and bring plenty of water and food with you as it can take up to 4 hours to do the out and back, especially when you are stopping to take photographs. You should also use the bathrooms at Longmire or Cougar Rock picnic area beforehand as there is none at the trailhead. Whilst the trail listed here is an out and back, you can make it into a loop by continuing up the hill to the overlook, where there is a fork leading down the other side of the creek and back to Longmire, from there you can take part of the Wonderland trail back to Cougar Rock, however you will need to walk up the road for the final part of this loop back to...
Read moreAwesome hike, so glad I did it!! The variety of scenery and final viewpoint make this the best trail I've ever hiked. It's steep, especially near the top, but it's SO pretty. Parts of the trail smell heavily of wildflowers and you'll get to see/hear waterfalls all along the way, then at the top you're face to face with Rainier's icy peak, so it's really a lovely experience. Tons of little critters are on this trail too! Once you get past the first waterfall, you're on your way to Comet Falls. Keep going and eventually you'll be met with a log bridge over a stream. Go LEFT here along the river until the trail resumes more clearly. Once you're in the wildflower meadows and your lungs feel like they're gonna explode, you're super close!! The last stretch is steep enough to be on your hands a bit, but once you're at Mildred Point, there's a ton of space to rest and look at the...
Read moreAn amazing hike to an absolutely amazing waterfall. Breathtaking. The hike is moderate with a lot of elevation gain. We have not been hiking much recently and I definitely am not in the best shape. But took our time and took a few breaks. Know your capabilities. There are a few steep areas. Pack plenty of water. There are stairs in a few places, and as is typically on trails, they are uneven and some are quite tall.
Parking is a bit limited at the trailhead. If taking more than one car or meeting someone here, consider parking down at the picnic area or other visitor areas with more parking and taking only one car to the trailhead.
This is in a NP and dogs are not permitted on the trails.
For restrooms the picnic area just down the road has flush toilets. These restrooms are not listed on the signs or map but are the...
