I have visited all of the state parks in North Dakota save one. (Graham's Island). My favorite so far is Cross Ranch. I have camped there numerous times. For newcomers, it's a little tricky to find. It's off the beaten path for sure. But it's worth it. The park is divided Into two sections about three miles apart. They are connected by a trail. The smaller section cannot accommodate large RVs. 20ft. max. However, I like the smaller section better. (Also known as Sanger campground). It's very close to the Missouri River. If you like to go rafting it's perfect. There's even a rafting company in nearby Washburn, that rents rafts and will even pick you up downstream. The Park is open year-round with plenty of activities. There's a nice trail for cross-country skiing in the winter or hiking in the summer. If you're a fisherman, the Missouri River has plenty of fish. Although I am not a fisherman, I heard there's walleye! I don't like to fish but I love to eat them! Yum! The last time I visited, there were upgrades taking place at Sanger. Water was being installed. Electricity is available as well. There are vault toilets. Althoughl Sanger was considered primitive, that may not be the case now. The park is well-maintained and the toilets are clean. I think the best thing I like about the park is the location. Next to the Missouri River, it's awesome. I'm not the type of person that likes to go out on big water but I like the Missouri River and I'm not afraid of it. It has a slow-moving current and is very picturesque even if you don't want to get into the water. I've heard that there are bald eagles living along the river. If you're the type of person wanting to get away from it all, Cross ranch is the...
Read moreMy girlfriend and I stayed here on a whim while traveling across the country. We stopped by to see the Sanger ghost town, and decided to ask the park ranger what she knew of it. She was a wealth of knowledge about the area, and one of the nicest people we met in our journeys. Sadly, I don't remember her name but she was wonderful. We picked a tent site right on the Missouri River, just after they cleaned up from the flooding. A lot of the grass was dead because of the flooding, but the area was BEAUTIFUL, quiet, and breezy.
Sadly, the weather turned rather quickly from 20% chance of rain to 90% chance of board up the windows. Our tent was turning inside out from the wind, lighting struck every 1/2 second, and we feared a tree falling on our tent. After water started leaking through the rain fly, we made it for the car, which the tent was tied to because of the wind. After getting one of the worst, coldest, wettest nights' sleep in my life, we woke to the beauty of the area again.
I highly recommend this campground, I highly recommend the park rangers there, and I highly recommend you double and triple check the...
Read moreWe stayed in the Bagnell Yurt and had such a blast! Beautiful location along the Missouri and nestled in among Cottonwoods. When we arrived the Visitor Center was closed, but soon a park ranger came by and helped us get where we needed to be and some more helpful information. I grew up going to this park, but had not been back in many many years—facilities have been upgraded and new yurts and cabins and campsites are available. We did a trail run in the morning and spent some time reading at the Visitor Center. My fiancé was totally impressed and said we’d be back. Thank you for all your care in maintaining this...
