SHARING SO YOU CAN AVOID THE FRUSTRATION-take a video of your bike
Bike Rental **
The bike rental service at Cranmore Mountain Resort was a poor experience. We rented 4 full suspension bikes, plus helmets. The bikes functioned fine and the staff was kind enough to refund one of the bikes because my wife wasn't able to make it down the easiest trail because it just wasn't going to be fun for her. We really appreciated that gesture.
The first issue occurred while the staff was preparing the bikes. They were pretty insistent that we buy the additional insurance (extra $15 per bike). We already purchased the full day pass, bike, and helmet on-line months ago. They basically said if you crash, you will pay out of pocket to repair the bike. I declined because I've rented bikes before with my family and I know how we were going to ride these trails. If I felt we were going to send it each run, then maybe I would have considered the insurance. The staff continued to try to upsell the insurance even saying specifically "... if you happen to break the derailleur, you'll have to pay to replace it plus labor...".
The second issue occurred at the end of the day. One of my kids wanted to stop riding before the park closed. My wife and him went to turn in the bike and during the "inspection" by the staff they noticed that the bike wasn't shifting correctly and was making noise. The person inspecting the bike called over someone else and they also said it didn't sound right and they needed to get a manager. While they waited for the manager, they mentioned something to effect of "...this is why we recommend the insurance...". The manager arrived and said it sounded fine, but that the derailleur was scratched. The behavior by the staff put my wife and son in a difficult position, seemingly insinuating that the bike was crashed. I rode behind my son the entire day and the bike never touched the ground. All of the bikes had scratches all over them, from the handlebars to the front triangle and the chain stay to the rims.
When it was time for me to drop off the other two bikes, I was ready for the staff to find something wrong. I watched the inspection, which included checking the handlebars for alignment, checking the headset for play, check the brakes for stopping power, and checking the shifts up and down the cassette. They found nothing.
The bikes worked for the intended purpose and we had fun on the trails. My recommendation would be to bring your own bike if possible and just get a park pass. If you must rent a bike, I would suggest the following:
Ask the staff to do an inspection before you take the bike. Take a video while walking around the bike and note any scratches. Beware of the pedals on the bike. They are the cheapest nylon pedals with no grip.
Bike Park *
The Cranmore Bike Park at the Cranmore Mountain Resort was great. We purchased a full day pass that included unlimited lift rides to experience the downhill trails at the park, a lift ride to the summit where you could have lunch and a 360 view of the Mt Washington valley. During our stay, the park was open from 10 am to 5 pm and that was plenty of time to do everything we wanted with a break for lunch. The trails offered something for all skill levels, with ratings from green to black. The trails allowed new riders to progress from a trail like Learning Curve all the way to Mothman if the rider was...
Read moreI've been here twice, and this time was the second. Last winter, my best friend and I went here for a few hrs. We had a good time and enjoyed it. Fast forward to 2024, this time around, since the weather and outdoor temperatures played a big impact the black mats at the other end of the tubing hill didn't really prevent kids and the adults from slowing them down. The only and best way to slow down would be to layer the black mats, not align them in a row, and expect guest to show down immediately! The young staff/ employees working should really consider putting sand where it's icy/ hard to walk or salt (meant for ice) there. Icy or not, they should do that vs. repeatedly reminding guests to quickly move out of the way. *How about putting themselves in our shoes and showing a little emotion or concern when someone accidentally falls. Instead, they look/ stare and expect nothing else. As if, when a person falls, you expect them to be okay?! If it's their job to monitor the guest, part of their job description should be the safety of guests when visiting. One would honestly think that for the sake of the employees working outside (in freezing cold temps), and knowing how important it is to keep their jobs, they'd actually have a bit of care, self awareness, and be more attentive. You don't get to stand and chit-chat!! One of the younger guys working at the top of the hill did his job, but I would rate him a D+. He wasn't an A for effort type of guy. Regardless of who he was, being an introvert or extrovert, his mood/ demeanor/ attitude/ or behavior, etc, imagine how nice he and talkative he would've been. Now I know it's nice to judge, but come on, live a little!! The huge downfall that I don't like one bit (and I know won't change) is being charged close to $50 per person for 2 hrs. That's a bit of a stretch. How about 35 to 40 per person for 2 hours. Maybe even do an hour session somewhere between $20 to $30 per person. While some may not mind spending that money, others may think differently and not like that one bit! Such as myself. The one thing my best friend and I saw in person was a family tubing down altogether. Now, this wasn't a 2-person chain. It was a big family going down in 7 separate snow tubes. First of all, that was obviously not the best idea. Secondly, it wasn't safe, and lastly, one of the family members who "on his own" being careless and not waiting patiently pushed them down within getting ok or approved by a staff member. Actions aside I would've given that family member a good honest talk and safety check! If I was on the job and saw that, I definitely...
Read moreOur family went on a cold, sunny weekend from 11-1. This place is booked solid during peak season so reserve tickets in advance. It was well organized and the runs were FAST but there was more waiting than tubing. Still, it was a fun experience. The biggest drawback is that it can be dangerous. If you're going fast enough, you bounce back into oncoming lanes, hit tubers trying to walk back to the lift and the employees have to grab or dive to stop you. They did a great job.at controlling potential chaos but there were a couple minor injuries. The potential for concussions and broken fingers abound though so have fun, do as they ask and be alert. The employees were incredible but surely don't get paid enough. Btw, the later you go on a cold, sunny day, the faster the lanes. The least fave part was the escalator that took us up the hill. It was a brilliant idea with non skid mats but not very wide and it stops n starts roughly causing jerking with nothing stable to hold. Not for people with balance issues...or those who have been drinking too much. To get there, head to Cranmore, take a right in the large parking lot and you'll see the tubing area in a minute or two. Park and walk up 1 flight of stairs for tix, change in the bathrooms, then up 1 more flight of stairs to the tubing area. Parking was ample and free, tickets were easy to buy at the machine outside, though they seemed overpriced for 2 hours. Perhaps the extra is for all the conveniences. There are plenty of bathrooms. They also have a small building at the bottom of the run to sit, warm up, eat, drink (cocoa, coffee, sodas and yes, alcohol) or socialize. More bathrooms there. We think Cranmore is wonderful. This was no exception. The family friendly options and convenience of being right in town can't be beat. It has always been a favorite bc of the gorgeous views and proximity to downtown North Conway. While waiting and waiting, perhaps relax, socialize and take in the beautful White Mountain air and views from the top of the run. They may not be as big as the Rockies, but they are just as beautiful and the Whites can be hiked in a single day (with...
