I camped at Covert a couple years ago in the middle of October. The experience was pretty good. The spots are kind of small but not the smallest that I've ever stayed on.
Unlike Van Buren campground, which is right down the road, the beach access is pretty simple. At Van Buren, the erosion prevented us from being able to just walk right to the beach. You had to walk up a big dune to access the beach. But that issue may be resolved at this point since the water levels are not nearly as high.
Covert is a good alternative if you cannot get into Van Buren to camp. But enough about Van Buren SP.
In 2020, when we camped here, the water levels were very high throughout the whole state, causing flooding and erosion along the great lakes. In response to that, Covert placed long pieces of wood into the water along the beach in order to slow the progression on the erosion. Here in 2022, a year that's been considerably dry so far, these preventative measures may not be as essential as then.
The sunset of Lake Michigan is everything that you would imaging it would be. That alone makes it worth the stay at Covert. The beach is somewhat low-key, meaning there is no concessions or anything like that.
Keep in mind that marijuana is prohibited and they make that clear in the rules and guidelines. I don't know how much it is enforced though.
There is also a code to enter the restrooms and showers.
Overall, this is a very nice campground, especially if you cannot get into...
Β Β Β Read moreBeen here for a couple a years i have not felt so harrased by new management. The first night we arrived they set the new rules which they claim been there already. Seemed like they handed you a bible of their place. They stressed about the quiet hours which we thought it was fine we arent loud. Come around 10pm they don't want any sound at all not even a talk. Come to you and said can't be talking its quiet hours. So a storm comes thru and still outside talking and in the middle of the storm ricks wife and him come says we are too loud. Im thinking the storm is way louder than us why bother coming out and getting wet. Second incident happens when we go out and come back. There was no one by the office and claims we flew through it and rick approaches us at the campsite. He was like a karen sending standards that he didnt give a damn if we did or not to slow down. We didnt even rushed through on a 5mph. He explicitly said it and cursed very unprofessional. Never in the years had an issue with this campsite. I will not recommend it...
Β Β Β Read moreVery nice, clean, reasonably-priced campground. During the week itβs perfect. The issue is, on the weekends, it is at capacity and it brings in people from the city who do not observe the rules of the campground. This would all be fine, except the camp staff do not enforce the rules: no music, quiet after 10pm, no dogs at the beach. Iβve been here four days and the weekdays were great very quiet and relaxing and the weekend brought a very different crowd. If you donβt want to listen to droning bass Mariachi music 16 hours straight blasting from a car stereo from 10AM until 2AM, and listen to loud people from Chicago with no concern for others peace and respite laughing loudly at all hours of the night, then avoid the weekends. The camp staff here work hard and I can tell they care, but Iβd really like to see them enforce the rules that are sent to every camper when booking a reservation. Otherwise, itβs a hidden gem of a campground in proximity to Indiana and Illinois with a...
