We have passed this museum for years every time we drive to and from the coast. I finally decided to make a special day trip out there to see it. They have so many neat things to see. The woman working spent a great deal of time with me, telling me all about what it used to be like in Crewe back in the day. They even have a large hand-made roundhouse that is a replica of what used to stand just behind the museum’s location. The man who made it also made replicas of other engines and cars. The detail and craftsmanship is incredible.
Kids will especially enjoy the large model train layout. They have signs detailing their future plans for that, to make it representative of what trains in the area used to transport. Kids will also enjoy being able to go inside the old engine and rail cars. You can even climb into the high seats on the caboose! I am pretty sure every caboose I’ve been in has those ladders roped off, but not this one.
The museum is free but donations are welcome. I hope people are generous so they can fully achieve their vision...
Read moreThis is a gem of Virginia. A must see! If you're on your way to the beach and making good time, or even if you're planning a trip, please stop in and support this true national treasure.
We were able to see a passenger car from 1949, climb up top of a real live caboose and sit in the engineer's seat of BOTH a steam engine AND an electric one. We got to see strange railroad vehicles i didn't know existed till today and got the full experience of working a real live pump car and pushing back and forth an electric one person rail car. We even got to watch an amazing set up of model trains that accurately represented virginia's industry in the last 100 or so years!
My littlest boy is two and in love with "choo choo trains." This experience was his heaven. His only regret was that it didn't...
Read moreThis museum is supported and run by volunteer former employees of the Norfolk and Western Railway (part of Norfolk Southern Railway since the merger with Southern in 1982). The volunteers were very friendly and happy to answer questions about the railway. They have a diesel and steam locomotive as well as freight and passenger rolling stock on the site. Inside are smaller artifacts of the Norfolk and Western Railway which had a large presence in the town. There is also a large model railroad inside that the kids will love. The town is still host to a large classification yard on the Norfolk Southern line between Roanoke and Norfolk, located behind the museum. Donations are requested but admission is free. Well worth a visit if you find yourself passing through Crewe...
