Beautiful place to check out, but make sure you've done your research Either book your ferry trip before you get there or do it at the park visitor center. Arrive at least 30 minutes before the ferry leaves. It is best to arrive for the 9am ferry as there are more guided tours you can take and you can walk around more leisurely. Even with 4 hours, you won't see the whole island if you're walking You will pay for a ferry fee and park fee separate Park at the designated parking lot, 30.720997, -81.551229. If you park on the street, it is 2 hr max parking and you will get towed You'll want to do a minimum of 4 hours. 2 hours is not enough! You'll barely have time to do the 4 mile loop at the bottom of the island You can see more shells and tiny crabs at racoon keys. Bring food and water and snacks. There are no food vendors on the island. They have stations where you can get water. To get around faster, you can bring your own bike! However, you'll have to get off at the sea camp dock so it'll be a like longer to check out the ruins. The water is very brown, so even though the beach at the bottom loop has nice white sand, it's not very appealing to get in the water Definitely check this place out, it is...
Read moreThe Cumberland Island experience is like no other. If you have never been, treat yourself. Located in South Georgia, just off the coast of St. Mary's. The island is a National Park, with the Seashore protected. Wildlife abounds, including wild horses, deer, turkey, and many aquatic birds. The island is also home to the ruins of a former mansion owned by steel tycoon Thomas Carnegie. It burned many years ago, leaving a picturesque ruin behind. The live oaks cover the island, making it look like something straight out of Narnia. There are several boardwalks and a marshwalk that provide viewing opportunities. And then there is the beach. Wow! Like no other. No commercial stuff and very few people. The shells are plentiful and many bird watching opportunities abound. The sand is beautiful, the white, powdery type. The ferry ride over and back also provides many picture opportunities. We saw dolphins both going and coming. Just an amazing day. Or you can camp if you like, with bathrooms, showers, water, and secluded campsites available. You can also rent a bike or bring your bike. You will make lifelong memories on the island. Bring your special someone. Bring the family. Bring your church...
Read moreGreat place. We rented bikes in St Mary's and that was a huge plus. Took the 9 am ferry. When we got off the ferry a ranger gave the bicyclists an orientation. We had been hoping to get to the Carnegie mansion at Plum Orchard but she said that it was a 4-6 hour trip as it was a rough road and didn't recommend going to Plum Orchard. We decided to give it a try anyway and with our single speed beach cruisers ended up making it to the mansion in about an hour. Which was just in time for the 11 am guided tour of the mansion. Excellent tour by the volunteer, he was knowledgeable and helpful. We are regular bicyclists and the road was likely in better than normal condition due to recent rain, so keep that in mind. You'll need to keep up a good steady pace. You can start out and see what your progress is near Stafford and make a decision. After a picnic lunch on the mansion grounds we cycled back, stopping at Little Greyfield Beach. Lovely beach, we had it all to ourselves. And we even had time for a short visit to the Dungeness ruins before getting back to the Sea Camp dock for the 4:45 ferry back. We saw many horses, a couple of armadillo and one turkey. Bottom line, great place to visit, having a bicycle...
