I like to celebrate my birthday all month long, and this year one of the surprise adventures that came into my field was a visit to Hopewell Sunflower Farm. Thanks to a Facebook post, I learned this place even existed. So, my sister, mom, and I piled into the car and made the jaunt from Roswell to Hopewell Road in Cumming.
What we found did not disappoint.
As we pulled in, we were greeted by a lovely gentleman who rushed across the field to tell us we could move closer to the rows of smiling yellow sunflowers after noticing us helping my mom into her wheelchair. So gracious, so welcoming.
We began our journey with a slow stroll through the sunflower gardenârow after row of golden faces all turned in the same direction, radiating joy. People of all ages wandered among them, each of us soaking in their presence.
If you know me, you know I love to take pictures (#photographyasmeditation), and I was in heaven. It wasnât the best time of day for photos, but that didnât stop me. I pulled an umbrella from the car for shade, took in the majesty, and surrendered to the moment.
This wasnât just about flowersâit was about connection. Strangers meeting in a shared reverence for nature.
At one point, I sat down in the shade of the towering blooms, and a little girl ran over, bright-eyed and curious. She plopped herself down on the ground in front of me, giggling, and then stretched out on her belly as if to say, this is how you really connect with the earth. She rolled from pose to pose, part yogi, part sprite, murmuring âtickle, itchy, tickleâ as the grass brushed her skin.
Then, with no hesitation, she threw her tiny arms around my neck, whispering her word of the day: Hi. Hi. Hi.
Her father approached, half-apologetic, but instead of interrupting, he simply knelt beside us and allowed the moment to unfold. I learned her name was Katyaâthough she proudly called herself Kat. With a playful meow and a crawl, she showed me her world.
Later, we gathered under the big tent, where the farmâs owners and helpers were building bouquets. My mom and I settled in beside Katâs dad while my sister, ever the helper, followed the owner back into the field to carry armfuls of long-stemmed sunflowers. Together, we watched as bouquet after bouquet found its way into grateful hands.
It was more than just a farm visit. It was a day woven with kindness, laughter, and the simple magic of sunflowersâand reminders of how nature connects us all.
Thank you @Hopewell...
