We were there for a murder mystery that advertised Chef Wheeler del Torro. It was advertised as "Murder at Mardi Gras" featuring a 4-course truffles and wine pairing event. The tickets were $54 per person. They were over priced but we never expected the outcome of our visit.
This is what we got: The event started late. The winery didn't close/stopped their usual wine tasting for the event as advertised on their website.
Tables were not properly set. The owner went by and threw just enough napkins in the middle of the table. We had to buy our own wine because they didn't offer anything to drink while we were waiting for the event to begin.
Food was not what I would call "Chef food". I didn't see any signs of truffles anywhere. No menu to see the reasoning for the pairings. Very small portions. We had to share utensils since they took them away along with the empty plates. We got two sips of wine only after asking for it.
We were asked to be part of the murder mystery (and we were there to participate and have fun while doing so) and eat while acting our part but if you weren't at your table when the food was being served you would have missed that particular course. If it wasn't for my husband and friends I would have missed a few courses.
The owner told us that the reason she couldn't serve wine was because if we got into an accident she would have been responsible, which is understandable, but she was telling us this as if we were drunk (there was no way we could have been drunk since we only bought two bottles (for 9 of us) thinking we were going to get wine with our meal).
We kept explaining to her that we had 2 designated drivers that night (we still didn't get what was advertised). I also mentioned to her "if you would have provided the wine with the courses as you advertised, you would have known exactly how much wine we all had and we would not have had to buy any wine at all."
We didn't stay until the end of the event. It was such a mess. I am not sure what deal was there between the chef and the winery but both were subpar. The whole thing was such a disappointment... we will never go back to this establishment.
Murder mystery at Ridgewood winery? DO NOT GO!!
Was there anything good about our visit? The building where the winery functions...
Read moreI attended a special event at Ridgewood where the winery partnered with a chef to put on a wine dinner and murder mystery. Based on my experience, I will never patronize this winery again, and it will take a lot of convincing to attend a murder mystery event. Although a lovely facility, the owner of the winery is not so good at providing a good customer experience. We expected a wine pairing dinner, but instead we got a series of tapas style "courses" with two wine tastings. The event part of the evening was chaotic, loud, and totally disorganized. We were encouraged to move to other rooms to meet the other characters in the murder mystery, but it turned out that if you weren't seated when they served the food, you missed out on that course. In general, the food was cold, lacking much flavor, and just flat out disappointing. As far as the wine, the tastings turned out to be insanely sweet wine, not to my liking. If you prefer a higher quality wine, try another winery. We bought a bottle of Gewurztraminer whose bouquet smelled more like something that came from an animal. I would NOT recommend it. We tried expressing our dissatisfaction to the owner, but that was a lost cause. She blamed everyone else, and did not accept any responsibility nor made any impactful strides of remedying anything. Just a big disappointment. There are lots of fantastic local wineries, try those instead...
Read moreRidgewood Winery is one of my favorite wineries!! They have quite a variety for the sweet palette, dry, red white. And they always seem to be popping up with new delicious creations! Not to mention...the.wine.slushies.
The enjoyment doesn’t end at the bottom of the glass while stopping here! If you’re into history or simply just like a story make sure you stop in to hear all about why this property is so special (no spoiler alerts) but you will find this establishment is listed as a Nationally Registered Historic Site.
