This is a beautiful location !!! Far away from all the craziness of this city. It is peaceful, tranquil and an awesome place to explore. We have visited the island many times because we just can't get enough. There are no garbage cans on the island so be sure to take what ever garbage is produced during your stay back with you. The private beach is crawling with hermit and blue crabs. You can see a sunken barge off of the north side of the island. During our last visit to Boca Chita their were abandoned home made boats that seemed to come from Cuba which was extremely interesting. The materials and conditions of the boats did't seem sea worthy at all but had surprisingly seamed to make the journey ashore. ashore. Boca Chita also offers camping grounds which is pretty awesome if you wish to gaze the stars from a tent at night while the ocean waves caress the shore. The Lighthouse has a cool story behind it because it was actually built on the wrong side of the island. BBQ's and picnic table are limited but never seem to be occupied. We'll be back to enjoy it...

Beautiful location. Informative and passionate guide. I would have liked more time one the island to enjoy the waters is the only downside. Here's what to expect if you do the boat tour through the park service. It's approximately a 3 hour tour. You will ride out to the island on a boat which will take about 50 minutes. Once at the island the guide will suggest that if you want to do the lighthouse tour that you go directly to the lighthouse. He will keep the lighthouse open for approximately 20 minutes. Other than that you are free to roam the island, swim, snorkel, have a picnic (if you brought one). There are no concessions on the island. You will have about an hour or so on the island and then you will load up in the boat and head back. While on the boat ride to the island and back your guide will provide some historic and ecological information. The lighthouse is only accessible by boat. If you own or have access to a private boat you can go spend a whole day or even camp on the island. There are restrooms...

I spent a lot of time here when I was a kid back in the 80's well that was before the government took it over. It used to be a privately owned island years ago. It has been about 25 years since I was there last. After my father passed away I never had the desire to go back again. When I went there last their used to be an air strip along the long end of the island. And a prison or brig over by the long wall. But I don't see it in the photographs anymore. It is a great place to visit you guys need to go...

This non-functioning lighthouse was built to signal to others that the island was open for partying but was never operational. Fortunately, the lighthouse is now used to collect rainwater. The entire island is a tropical paradise and thanks to the Biscayne National Park Institute's tours, we were fortunate to get an hour to explore it. There are numerous species of birds, iguanas, fish, and more to see here. Biscayne National Park is only 5% land and this part is absolutely worth visiting!

Wonderful spot in Biscayne National Park. Need personal boat or Park Institute tour to get there. Camping available. Bathrooms available. Picnic tables, both open and sheltered. Short hiking trail (although it is under construction to rebuild a bridge; so you need to get your feet wet or go around as two one way hikes). Need to bring all your own food and water. Can only go up lighthouse with someone from Institute. Great snorkeling available. Truly beautiful.

This is a highly underrated lighthouse. It's a quick climb to the top, and you can see Sharks, Eagle Rays, seagrass, and practically the entire island. You can even see the Miami skyline on the horizon. The top of the lighthouse gives you 360-degree views. The only down-side is that you cannot stay up top indefinitely as the tour guides have to open/close the facility for you.
