Beautiful Spring day for a walk at Francis Perkins National Monument. Ample parking off the River Road in Newcastle. The trail head starts behind the barn. Eventually forks off to the North or South trail. The North trail has old foundations while the south trail meanders through established mostly deciduous forest. Eventually both trails open into a large field. Once through the field the trail narrows to the river. Great views of oyster growing rafts. A small stream to the south of the trail. Great for bird viewing. Plenty of large rocks to sit by the river but no chairs or tables. The house was not open when I visited. See website for details.

This is one of the newest National Park Services properties. Frances Perkins was the first woman appointed to cabinet position. This is her house that she grew up in. The NPS took over the property this year and are in process of renovating it for public use. At this time the barn had exhibits in it about her life a s career. The house is expected to be ready for visitors next summer.

I went for a book talk and I’d been excited about going for weeks. The volunteers were very helpful and the exhibits are informative, but I especially loved the trails on the grounds which you can access from dawn to dusk.

Not worth the trip! I would give them zero stars if I could! After a 1 1/2 hour trip from Kennebunk I found the center closed! It is suppose to be open from 10am to 2pm. I arrived there at 12:30 pm and the place was closed! They also have no directional signs to the homestead. I asked a local and he says the place is never open. This is a sad legacy for a woman who raised the quality of life for millions of Americans. Instead of making fancy brochures and websites, they should pay someone to be at the museum during their...
