We got to Pine Island from Tree Tops Park. We entered with a sense of respect and solemnity, considering the history of the place. If you go from Tree Tops Park you’ll see a statue of Sam Jones who helped his fellow Seminole people escape. Instead, of you come in from the town that surrounds the Nature Preserve, you’ll find a larger statue of Lauderdale who was sent by Jackson to fight the Seminole. The wild part of the preserve meets a manicured area right about half way. What was going to be a golf course has been preserved, although not an island any more, for “the Everglades were drained to allow for human inhabitants”...
