Fabulous!!! Well worth the drive to loop. Along the way the road was lined with wonderful pollinators attracting many butterflies and bees. As you travel the road to the parking lot the views continuously improve making each photo better than the last. Parking lot provided plenty of space. Loop was an easy hike and very enjoyable. The views are stunningly beautiful. Visibility for miles upon miles. Rocks provided fun photo opportunities. First half of the loop is clearly marked and easy to follow. Can’t say the same for the second half. Definitely leads you out to what feels like the middle of nowhere. The other visitors out and about in the rock areas seemed to disappear on second half of walk. Continue out of the trail by taking lefts when the trails split to return to parking lot. Highly recommend this preserve. There are so many great hiking trails at Dolly Sods. I definitely want to try them out on...
Read moreAbsolutely breathtaking! Peak colors right around Oct 17th each year. But.. Dolly Sods was shockingly busy and there is minimal parking, which causes hour-plus long traffic problems! Cars parking along both sides of an unpaved roadway that is barely two car widths + traffic coming and going = arrive by 10 am, hike up this path for a couple hours, then continue driving to the other end of the park (Forest Road 75). You will probably end up driving a bit more in total miles but likely less overall unpaved roadway and a shorter round trip. Also, it is a bit cooler and windier up there, bring a hoodie and dress in a couple layers this time of year. This trail is not wide so don't think about shorts or your legs will get scratched up. This area can be damp (not quite 'muddy') so don't wear your nice kicks, opt...

When I think back on our day at Dolly Sods Wilderness, I remember coming up over the hill on Forest Road 75 and seeing Bear Rock Preserve for the first time. Time spent climbing boulders and checking out the scenic view was definitely the highlight of the day.
From the top of Bear Rock Preserve, you have a 360-degree view of the area. If you are lucky and the weather cooperates, you can see for miles.
Most of the iconic photos you see of Dolly Sods on the Internet are actually taken at Bear Rock Preserve. This place is a must see when traveling...
