Dog Walking in Boston—Wilson Mountain Reservation

Dog Walking in Boston—Wilson Mountain Reservation

First time visiting. First impressions; Easy parking and off street access. Trails are wide and in pretty good shape. Both start out at an incline but not steep so that most people could handle them. Fairly easy to tackle, having recent back surgery, still getting back in shape and 70 years old, I didn’t find it too strenuous. Lots of flora and fauna to see especially if you wander off the main trails a bit. We found a pond with lots of Lilly pads, lots of rhododendrons growing wild, some lady slippers and numerous other plants. We found several streams and observed lots of granite walls and small cliffs along with other rock formations. My only complaint is that the trails should be marked better. At the beginning there are signs for two trails; one going left the other going right. We took the one to the left and I never saw another trail marker. There were some trails that shot off the main trail but these are not marked either. So it’s unknown which way to go on these smaller trails as they spilt too. It wasn’t clear if these smaller trails were looks that would bring you back to the main trail. The one we took was not a loop and we ended up behind ame maintenance area for the Northeastern athletic facilities. It wasn’t hard to figure out how to get back to the parking lot but not sure if Northeastern minds us cutting through their property. As long as you stay on a trail I don’t think you will get lost, but better markings and perhaps having some maps available at the beginning would help. Norris Reservation in Norwell is very similar ( except flat) and it provides free maps and all of the trails are clearly marked.

Great place for a nice walk in the woods but the amount of trash, especially at the beginning of the trails was disgraceful. We saw at least 6 bags left behind by dog owners. It also didn't help that the trash can next to the parking lot was overflowing. I hope people can show more respect for this wonderful local resource so it can be appreciated by everyone.

I love this area and so does my dog. However I have HAD IT with off leash dogs. It is ILLEGAL have your dog off leash here or anywhere in Dedham aside from the dog park. I always have my dog on leash even though he's fine with all dogs. This morning we went on a walk and someone's off leash dog straight up charged my dog growling for no apparent reason the second we started on the trail. Nothing came of it, but the owner did very little to get her dog under control and she didn't apologize at all. We just got our dog out of there. Then we proceed to see more and more dogs off leash...every single one coming up to my leashed dog without permission. My dog plays great with other dogs and goes to daycare regularly, but I feel unsafe in these situations. My dog wanted to play with most of the dogs and it was hard to remove him when other dogs kept following. lf you know anything about dog behavior it can be extremely dangerous to have dogs meet on leash in uncontrolled situations and even more so if one is off leash and can't be controlled and the leashed dog can't get away. Some of the off leash dogs here are super well behaved but many are not. Please enforce this or make it an approved off leash...

These red and blue trail marks on trees are very confusing here and there. You go let's say on a red trail and there is an area where red and blue trails overlap and it must be red AND blue marks on trees, so you know that you're still on the right way. But instead red and blue marks alternate each other and I must say that it's very confusing. Other than that everything is beautiful, scenery is great. Dogs are mainly unleashed, however there is a...
