This is probably my favorite inland lake in Ohio for recreational boating. There's something to offer no matter what you're looking to do.
If you'd like a busy and social atmosphere, stay in the North end of the lake, where you'll find the campground, marina, and plenty of boater traffic, along with tubers, sailboats, and water skiers.
If you're seeking a little more solitude, head South and meander through the River....the further you go, the more tranquil it becomes, and if you enter the wildlife preserve in the very southern portion, you may find yourself surrounded by nothing but nature.
There a number of ramps to access the lake, but none are particularly nice, if I'm being entirely honest. They all lack suitable bathroom facilities, and traffic, parking, and boater competence and courtesy (you know what I mean...) can vary wildly depending on the day.
However, Berlin Lake's biggest flaw, and the one that results in its 4-star rating, is the fluctuating water levels. By that, I should specify that I mean LOW water levels. Since this was originally built for flood control exclusively, recreation was an afterthought, and this mentality is still maintained to this day, despite being an antiquated methodology. Water levels start to drop precipitously in late July and early August, and it actually becomes a DANGEROUS place to attempt to boat, ski, etc.
Personally, I'm a PWC rider, and there are portions of the lake in late summer that even I am unable to navigate, and there are structures mere inches below the water that could result in tragic and catastrophic destruction and injury.
If the Corp of Engineers can eventually abandon the archaic emptying of the lake prior to mid-October, you'd see the rating go to 5 stars and the economy skyrocket in this area, along with land prices. That said, that also brings both positives and negatives.
Either way, this is an excellent inland lake for you to enjoy early to mid summer activities, and it offers plenty of diversity, depending on what you're looking for on...
