Jaycee is a really nice park, that doesn't seem as well known as some of the featured parks in Deerfield. As such, it's not often as crowded as Jewett Park or Maplewood Park can be. Jaycee Memorial Park's playground equipment seem very good quality, and well maintained. The shelter isn't fancy, but is also well maintained, and the restrooms are clean (open seasonally). They have several water fountains that have excellent water pressure (also seasonal). The large parking lot is in great shape, along with the paved paths that surround the park. The main park grounds are well kept, as are the baseball diamonds, and drain well after rain or snow-melt. It got partially re-turfed in May 2024, and seems in great shape. I bet this will help reduce mosquitos even more (Jaycee does get a lot of mosquitos in the summer compared to other parks in the area).
Jaycee's fenced-in dog run still (as of may 2024) is still FREE, and doesn't require a pass. There are so few places in the Deerfield and Highland Park area that allow dogs off-leash without a permit, so big thumbs up. It's double-gated to prevent escapes, is generally pretty well maintained, but it isn't segregated by size - supervise your dogs to keep 'em out of trouble. Parts of the field can get torn up and muddy midway through the spring season. The dog watering stations are very good, and are perfect for hydrating thirsty pups or washing off mud. There are a few play areas for dogs to run through or climb, but sometimes - when it's damp out - the small landscaping stones may wear dogs paw pads. As well, the west end of the dog run doesn't drain as well as the rest of the park (though it has improved after some work in 2023). As such, it can get really muddy at the far end of the dog run, and the mosquitoes tend to be more concentrated back here.
If you go on a fairly dry day, this is a great park for dogs and people. After a rain, though, I tend to avoid coming here until the ground has had some time to dry. There are also only a few lights near the parking lot and shelter, so plan to head out before dusk. Deerfield PD patrols the area frequently, so it's generally pretty...
