This AMAZING park was a missing piece of African American's contribution to California's history. It's the hidden treasure in the back yard of California residents. It's tucked away between Fresno and Bakersfield with signs to guide you directly to the park. What an AMAZING EDUCATIONAL TOOL FOR all students. More specifically it's also an excellent tool to offer African American youth a positive "medium" full of positive messages and images of their people and ultimately--themselves. The scenery was beautiful as we visited the sites. It was like stepping back in time and expieriencing the past. The atmosphere had a strong sense of community and made me feel like I was connecting with family. I was greeted with smile after smile from well informed Dosers and other park visitors who were just as excited as I was to see and experience Allensworth. The booths were AWESOME; deliscious food, beautiful clothes in African themes, convenient health booths with actual assistance to check your blood pressure, and blood sugar and much more. The gift shop was AWESOME too! I purchased an amazing t-shirt that I can't wait to wear to BOAST the Allensworth history to the world! (And I got a free cute little canvas bag to got with it!) THIS WAS AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE! I CANT WAIT TO GO BACK AGAIN THIS...

There are great events every year that are worth making the trip and attending. And even if you want to drop by when there's nothing scheduled it is still worth it. We camped there and it was very hot, the flies drove us crazy, and there were some pesty people driving around at night doing stupid stuff. Thank goodness the Sheriff kept watch on our family the one night we camped there. Also the staff and the Rangers are good people to connect with. And the documentary is a must watch, especially since Danny Glover narrates it. Besides, the trailer it's shown in has AC and is a wonderful respite from the heat. I would highly recommend this place for day trips and special events. Black history is essential to America and places like this must be kept open and available for all of us. Here's to Col. Allensworth and all the townspeople who lived the dream and fought to make this place a state park. A...
Β Β Β Read moreWe spent 4 hours there at the Old Time Jubilee. We have wanted to get here for years, but the docents only have the houses open on the major events they hold a couple of times per years. Spring is alot cooler than summer so we went in May and the weather was fine. Start at the visitor's center for a video to get up to speed as to why this was settled, how it did and how it ended. Then check out the buildings. All very simple buildings which have been reconstructed on their original locations. A couple are Sears kit houses, the church is quite large, The livery house is original. They have a shed labeled blacksmith and the materials are inside, but it was locked up when we were there. A large number of docents are in the houses on this day and they were the real reason to come on a festival day. You really got a sense of why the residents came and stayed here got getting the different viewpoints. Lots of good food to be had from the festival vendors; bring your own if you do not come on a festival day. There is a campsite attached...
